Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : June 25, 2016
Embassy Review : I'm the US Petitoner and went with my foreign fiancé to the consulate.

So easy! Our interview was scheduled for 8am and we were out by 9:45am. The consulate was definitely not what was expected in the sense that everything looked so old-school. Nothing modern looking there. You're not allowed to bring any food or electronics. We left our phones in the car and only had our sunglasses, wallets, and documents.

The process was so smooth. They give you a number when you walk in the entrance. You then pass through the scanner/security and then go downstairs where you take an elevator to the 19th floor (if you forgot to get passport pictures, they have a little photobooth here where you can get them for $10). The elevator opens right into the waiting room. For K1 visas, you sit in the middle section under the "immigrant visa" sign. You wait a bit and then they will call you to the window. Not sure if they always operate like this but Window 1 collected documents for odd-number tickets and Window 2 took the even-numbers. Thought I would mention this because it drove us nuts when numbers 8 and 10 were called up way before us.

As far as documents are concerned, they only took my letter of intent, fiancé's medical results, my 2015 1040 tax form, his original police certificates (make sure you make a copy for your records!), and his original birth certificate (which they gave back to us).

For the affadavit of support, I had prepared letters from my banks, bank statements, credit card statements, voters registration card, employment letters, paystubs, 2013/2014/2015 tax returns, IRS tax transcripts for 2013/2014/2015 taxes. We also had evidence of our relationship (boarding passes, hotel receipts, car rental receipts, bank statements proving that I conducted transaction at what location, pictures, letters, Skype log) but they did not take not one thing.

After they took what they wanted, we sat back down in the middle section and 5 minutes later they call us to another semi-room for the interview. However, as soon as they saw me, they told me to wait outside in the seating area. Three minutes later, fiance comes out grinning. He said they asked him basic questions. Where do I live? What is my occupation? Fiance said the interview wasn't anything formal. It felt like he was just talking to a friend - the Consulate Officer was very friendly and joking around.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
