Consulate Review: Bangkok, Thailand
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : June 10, 2016
Embassy Review : I arrived in Bangkok on June 4th to go to the Embassy to support my fiancée. June 5th, we went to the hospital and got her medical completed. (Just fyi, if you're short on visa photos, the business center is on the 10th floor and you get 8 photos for 200 baht.)

June 6th, her interview time was at 11:30am. We arrived early and she went in about 10:45am and came out at 12:15pm with a 221(g). I had a non-traffic situation from last year and the interviewer asked her if she was aware of it and if it was OK? She said she didn't know anything about it and the interviewer gave her the 221(g) with instructions to talk with me and send them an email of the result. Then they would reschedule for the 2nd interview.

We had met in a coffee shop in Chiang Rai and he asked her if she liked coffee. Asked about our age difference and what was my job. He went through the 3 ring binder of proof of relationship documents and that was it.

When I read the information on the 221(g) sheet, I couldn't have known what it was either. The legalese was barely decipherable for an American let alone an non-native English speaker. When I explained what it was for, she already knew about it so we went directly to the hotel and send an email to the IV unit per their instructions explaining ticket and it wasn't a problem.

The next morning, June 7th, we got an email to return at 11:30am. We didn't go so early this time as she had to sit and wait the day before. My girl said she went in, saw the same interviewer and he asked her if everything was OK. She said yes, he took her passport and said' "good luck with your visa and it will take 10 business days". She was in and out in 20 minutes.

I then sent an email to the IV unit asking about the 10 day wait and got the following response:

"Currently, your visa has progressed to the next stage of our visa approval process. The case status means the consular officer believes your case is documentarily qualified for issuance. We caution you that this is not a guarantee of issuance as all applicants need to clear the final stage of background checks. Applicants must refrain from making any irrevocable travel arrangements until they receive the visa package including their passport with the visa inside. It could take a minimum of 10 working days before background checks and a visa package is prepared. Once the visa package is ready, it will be mailed to the applicant at the mailing address indicated on his/her GSS profile. All the original civil documents will be returned to the applicant in this package. We appreciate your patience as your application is completing the final adjudication step."

I returned home to the US on June 8th and checked the CEAC website and the status was "ISSUED". My girl received the visa packet on June 10th.

Overall, not a bad experience other then the 221g glitch. The Embassy handled it quick and accommodating to the fact that my fiancée had to leave Bangkok on the 8th and then got her back in the next day on the 7th. The interviewer wasn't rude and was business like. They also provided her with a translator for some of the things she didn't understand clearly. The IV unit was also quick to answer our emails.
Rating : Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
