Comments : The POE was the easiest part of this entire process. I literally went inside at Blaine, WA, they stamped my visa and I left. The guy was super nice, asked if I had any questions and even offered help with my I-485. I told him we'd prepared almost everything and were just waiting for the marriage certificate!

Consulate Review: Vancouver, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : December 1, 2015
Embassy Review : Hi All,

I had my interview at the US Consulate Vancouver on Tuesday, December 1st scheduled for 8AM. I arrived at 7:15AM and there was already a line-up of around 20 people. The security guard asked me what I was there for and I said K-1 visa t 8AM. He told me to come back at 7:45AM, so perhaps the standard is to just arrive 15 minutes early. I went to the Marriott Pinnacle hotel and used the iMacs in their business center for ½ an hour, which was a great way to burn the time as I hadn’t brought any electronics with me. They also have free printers so if you have forgotten to print something off last minute that is a free place to do so.

I returned at 7:45AM and there were two women in red coats at the sidewalk checking people’s documents. They want to see your DS-160, Passport and medical results. After she checked that that was all okay, I got in line, waited for around 5 minutes, then got up to the front. Another lady checked all my documents and then sent me inside up the stairs. I didn’t have a cellphone, but they do let you check it in a little box. I walked up the stairs and went through airport-style security. After that, I got in an elevator and it took me up to the 20th floor. They had told me to go to window B and flick the switch, so I did that. The clerk took my documentation and prepared it for the Consular Officer in a pink folder. He requested:

(1) Passport
(2) Birth certificate & photocopy
(3) Medical results
(4) DS-160
(5) Intent to marry letter
(6) Affidavit of Support (I-134) **Note, my fiancée forgot to sign this, and he did want it signed, so I had to e-mail it after the interview. No big deal, but make sure you sign and date it**

After that he said everything looked fine and told me to sit down and wait until my number was called for the interview. I waited 15 minutes or so then went up to Window # 6 where the officer was waiting. He seemed surprised that I didn’t have my passport (I told him the clerk took it) then turned around and realized my pink folder was sitting there for him. He brought it over and began going through everything that I had provided, in addition to the I-129F package that we initially sent to USCIS.

The officer took my finger prints multiple times, asked me to take an oath that everything in the package and that I would say would be true. He asked me to confirm that I was born in Vancouver, BC am free to and intend to marry my fiancé within 90 days of entering the USA on the visa. He spent a lot of time going through the I-129F package and the I-134, flipping through the pages, looking at photos and flight itineraries, etc.. However, he didn’t really have many questions. First question was: “Tell me about your relationship from start to finish”. I gave him and overview of the last four years of dating my fiancé. Then he asked about my fiancé’s company, what they do, etc. so I told him. He kind of asked if I had ever worked in the USA while there in the past and of course I said “No”. After that he said “Okay, everything seems to be in order, you just need to get the I-134 signed and send it back”. Then he walked away and said that the clerk at Window B would assist me in finishing up.

The clerk was assisting another woman who also seemed to be applying for a K-Visa. However, she had brought the wallet-sized BC birth certificate, which is not acceptable. Sounds like it will delay her whole process. It’s important to bring the full-sized version. After that, the clerk called me up and said that basically my visa is approved, I just need to send the I-134 and then I would receive my visa within 5 business days, and that the courier would contact me. I asked a few questions that might be of help to Canadian applicants:

(1) Can I enter the USA while the consulate is processing my visa using an Enhanced Driver License. Answer from him: “Yes, and if they ask you about the K-1, explain that it is pending”
(2) Can I enter the USA after the visa has been issued, but not use the visa for that particular entry. Answer: “Yes, just ensure you tell them at the Port of Entry that you are not getting married and you are just going to visit”. He also said you have to make sure when you do want to enter on the visa, to get the stamp that shows that it’s valid for 90 days. He said it will cause a lot of trouble if you don’t get that.

So now, I am waiting to hear when my passport will be ready for pick-up. Good news! If any Vancouver-filers have any specific questions, please feel free to reach out to me on VJ.

Thanks so everyone for their help! I could have never done this without a lawyer if it had not been for the helpful forums. P.S. I will update once I cross at Blaine, WA POE.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
