Comments : My fiance accompanied me to my K1 visa interview in Mumbai. We took a cab to the BKC at 6.30 from Powai where we are putting up at a friend's place. The ride took around 20 mins as the roads were empty and the fare was reasonable.

After reaching the gates of the Consulate we saw a huge line for visa interviews but when I approached the security officer about my interview he said we can go straight in as ours was immigrant visa. But the initial hiccup was they do not allow phones into the embassy and there is no place nearby where we can deposit our phones or belongings. We were walking around looking for places but at 7 am in the morning none of the shops or offices were open. We finally went inside BKC Trident and requested the reception staff if the could hold onto my phone while I took the interview. The staff was very helpful and held onto the phone for no charge.

Next, we proceeded into the building where there was security checks and then we were guided into a different section of the embassy building for immigrant visa interviews. We were asked to get our token number from counter no.1 and then a staff came and helped us arrange our initial documents that had to be submitted for the first round of the interview. After about half an hour we were called to counter no.6. A young, friendly, female consular officer asked us some questions.

1) Is this your fiance/petitioner?
2) Asked for my PCC, Medical, Original and photocopies of my birth certificates and took my old and new passports.
3) Brought in our original I-129f file and browsed through it.Asked what my fiance's job is and what I do for a living.
4) Confirmed that I had been to the States on an F1 visa and was fairly amused when she found out I went to attend a Dance program in New York as most Indians go to the States for IT/PHD jobs or study programs.
5) I aksed the consular officer, " So ma'am do you like to Dance too?" To which she had a funny response, " I like to shake it sometimes."
6) She even asked my fiance if he is a dancer too. I replied on his behalf saying yes when he is drunk. This was kind of an icebreaker. She was thoroughly entertained with the conversation and asked us to enjoy our wait till the next interview with the American CO.
7) She also handed us the Domestic Violence leaflet and asked me to go through it.

The wait for the next part of the interview was pretty long. It was about 2.5 hours. In the meantime we saw two other K1 visa cases who were ahead of us get rejected. One of them didn't even have the Affidavit of Support. It's a big red flag. So be prepared with your documents. Also I think posture and confidence matters. We saw them leaning on the counter window and fidgeting.

At around 11 am we were called to Counter no.13 for our final interview with the American CO. He was a young, male, Indian-American Consular officer and greeted us with a big smile.

He excused himself for a moment and had to go collect my I-129f from his desk. While he was doing that me and my fiance were chit chatting. I think they see observe people while they wait as well, seeing how we interact with each other. Anyways, he got back to the window soon he tasked me to put my right hand up and take an oath of honesty. Then he did the fingerprints. he proceeded to ask us some fairly simple questions.

1) I assume he is your fiance?
To which I answered, "Yes Sir"

2) So you are a dancer I see?

3) How long did you stay in the US?

4) When did you first meet your fiance?

5)When did you first meet your fiance in person?

6) Where does your fiance stay?
My fiance accidentally started answering this when he was stopped and said in a joking way, " Sir we are trying to do a very important job here, to see if your beneficiary knows where she stayed with you. Ha Ha! But yours is a very transparent case nevertheless.

7) Where does your fiance work?

8) Then he took out some of our pictures from the I-129f folder and asked us about the details of the pictures.

He was joking about us taking a picture in front of the White House.

After that he took this white slip that said, " Your visa is approved." He then told us, " You'll receive your visa from the pick up centre within 3-5 days and you'll receive a text/email whenever your visa is be ready"

I was ecstatic, I clearly couldn't control my joy of finally getting this after a long wait for nearly a year. I hugged and kissed my fiance in front of the officer and he said, I wish you a happily ever after and good luck for the next chapter of your life in the US.

We were very happy with the way they handled our case. The staff was courteous and efficient.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
