Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : September 5, 2015
Embassy Review : READ THESE REVIEWS, seriously! If you do, you will be so prepared and have about the best experience you can have for this interview!!!

The day before my interview I scoped out the consulate to make sure I knew where I was going. The door is on Rue St. Alexandre - it's nothing special so if you're wondering if that is the main door, you are right. I got there just after 7am and another family and another girl was there (from VJ, but didn't catch her name ) who also had a K-1 visa interview. More people showed up after that, but a lot more were for non-immigrant visas.

At around 7:30am, an officer came outside to tell everyone to line up and a lady told all 7:40 appointments to move to the front of the line. I had to show my passport and appointment letter, was given #2 (she briefly mentioned to sit in the middle section of seats once we got to the 19th floor with other immigrant visas) and went inside to security. It was very quick - I just had to take off my belt/watch and put it in the tray along with my folder and wallet. I walked through the metal detector and went downstairs to the basement and sat right by the elevator. There is a passport machine in the corner.

At 8am an officer came and the elevator was loaded (if you have one of the first tickets make sure you are on the first elevator because they call the numbers pretty quick upstairs). You exit out the back of the elevator, where immigrant visas sit in the middle and non-immigrant visas form a line. My number (#2) was called first after 2 minutes to the second window (I guess window #1 was running late, and odd numbers call odd numbers and vice versa). She was very nice, and very quick! I was asked for my passport & photocopy, birth certificate & photocopy, the unopened medical envelope (the CD was returned to me), the police certificate, the appointment letter which proved I had paid the visa fee already, the letter of intent, and the affidavit, to which I also included the tax transcript for 2014, letter of employment, 3 paystubs, and a statement of earnings for 2015. I also had bank statements but she said I gave more than enough. She asked me where I lived, and where my fiancé lived. She also said I was very organized :D. She took my fingerprints, gave me the IMBRA letter, and then I sat down again. I will mention that I was never asked for my DS-160 page which I thought was strange but oh well.

I waited then until about 9am. There is a small child's area, some vending machines, washrooms, and a TV. The other VJ girl had her interview before I did, and then I was called after her. It's a tiny room and you stand in front of a counter and you are separated by glass. I had to read the oath out loud and sign using fingerprints. The CO asked me my fiancé's name and how we met (video games), to which he specifically asked what video game. He asked me where exactly my city of birth was located (as I was born in the UK and he had not heard of it before) and verified that I had moved to Canada before 16, which I had and there were no further questions with that. He asked if I or my fiancé had been married or had children; if I had ever entered the U.S. illegally; if I ever had actually been to the U.S.; where my fiancé and I had first met in person; if I had received and read the IMBRA package. Just like others, no relationship evidence was required, though I brought extra just in case. I saw him look over the affidavit but he literally asked no questions about it or my fiancé's job. Honestly I don't think he looked at me at all until he gave me the letter and "welcomed me to the U.S.A.!". He said the visa would be issued in 1-2 weeks, and then I left to go back down the elevator to exit the building. The interview was less than 5 mins and I was out of the building by like 9:05am.

My experience overall was decent, my only issue was with the security guards!!! In every encounter they were so rude. Outside when they lined us up they seemed very impatient with a person who asked a simple question. During the security process, there are two desks but a metal detector only on one side so I accidentally started to go the wrong way (which one would assume is the right way) and they were mean about that too. And when I came back downstairs they were clearly impatient with someone who doesn't speak English and muttered "are you stupid?" to him. Just.. yeah. Don't spend too much time with them and you'll have a great experience!

POE Review: CDN-USA Border
Event Description
Entry Date : 2015/09/24
Embassy Review : I crossed at the Queenston Lewiston port of entry by car on 2015/09/24.

I am still astounded at how pleasant and friendly each CBP was with me.

I arrived at around 10:45am on a Thursday and had to wait about 30 mins to get to the CBP. I told him I was entering on a K-1 visa, that I had the brown envelope and also had my pet bird. He kept my passport and directed me to park by the building. He laughed at a silly joke and congratulated me on my soon-to-be wedding.

An officer from Fish & Wildlife directed me to park in the shade for the purpose of my bird, who had to stay in the car. This lady was amazingly friendly, not only to me, but with everyone she encountered. Inside, I first had to fill out a form for my bird, which was photocopied and they had to call the vet to confirm I had made the appointment (to which I thought that he came to the border, but this is not the case - you have to go to a facility 10 mins away to have him checked and it costs $40). Then I headed to the waiting area where they processed visa applications. After 15 mins or so my name was called. The CBP was the same officer who had answered my call inquiry a few days ago and he remembered me and was very friendly. He took my envelope and suggested that I should sit back down. After another 10 mins he asked me my address, and explained that I have 90 days to get married. I asked what my status was in the US and he said I'm a K-1 immigrant right now, and after I get married, but before I apply for AOS, I will be CR (conditional resident). I said I wanted to import my car and he said to go back to the other desk.

Here I waited a while for them to call me. I watched people come and go until I asked the officer at the door if there was any forms I could be filling out while I was waiting. He said yes, and if I had even been looked after yet. I said I had primarily, but now I wanted to import my car. He made sure I was next in line. I then filled out the forms (I have a whole thread on this because I had a Hyundai, but everything worked out in the end, just search for the topic: Thinking ahead about my car), no duty to be paid, stamped, and told me I could leave. Everyone was so friendly!

Mind you, about 50% of the people in there were being questioned to death about their goods and their purpose in the USA. It was like watching an episode of Border Security where everyone else was concerned. A girl came out sobbing from the lock-up cell. You will NOT be bored while waiting. But they were extremely friendly with me and I had no issues whatsoever.

Total time was about 30 mins in line in my car, then about 1hr 30 inside.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
