After 12 months since we filed the K1 visa petition, the day finally arrived for my fiancé to travel to Ciudad Juarez for his interview! A friend of his went with him because I was unable to accompany him due to having just given birth to our daughter 2 weeks prior.
My fiancé and his friend spent 6 nights in Juarez. They stayed at the Microtel Hotel (Ibis was cheaper but they had no availability for a few of the nights). Microtel cost around $75 per night with tax, which was too expensive in my opinion, but it was the cheapest one available in that area. The location is great, being right next to the consulate and the medical exams, and across from the Las Misiones mall. The hotel itself was nice from what I heard and saw via Skype haha! I'd recommend it if there's nothing less expensive available.
Monday, Feb 22: My fiancé and his friend arrived at Juarez. Took a Taxi to the hotel and paid about $250 pesos. Checked in and unpacked. Then had dinner at La Cabaña restaurant next to Las Misiones mall.
Tuesday, Feb 23: Went to the embassy at 7:30am to pick up his appointment letter (Packet 3) since it never arrived in the mail. My fiancé had to wait nearly 4 hours in line for this letter! His biometrics appointment was at 1:40pm so thankfully he had plenty of time. The fingerprints went well and there were no problems whatsoever.
Wednesday, Feb 24: He arrived at La Clinica Medica Internacional for the medical exam around 7am (no appointment needed). He was given a quick eyesight exam, got bloodwork done, got an xray taken, and was mistakenly given 4 shots! Upon arriving, they never asked my fiancé what kind of visa he was there for and just went off of the appointment letter. For some reason, they thought my fiancé was there for the spouse visa and they gave him a bunch of shots and ended up charging him $410 dollars! He didn't have all that money and had to go to a bank to withdraw it. He went back and paid. Luckily a few hours later once I confirmed that shots are not needed for fiancé visas, I called the clinic, explained the situation and they told me he needed to go back to the clinic so that they could look at his documents again. After talking to a few people, they gave him $190 back since they made the mistake. They were very nice about it all and thankfully it all worked out in the end! He was told to return at 2pm for the results. It ended up taking 2 hours because he was the very last person out of a lot of people to get his results.
Thursday, Feb 25: The big day!
My fiancé's interview appointment was at 8:15am. He arrived there super early (around 7am) and was out by 8:45am. He said his interview was much easier than he thought it'd be! He got a nice, young, American woman. The questions she asked my fiancé were:
What is your fiancé's name?
Is she here with you?
Where was she born?
Where does she work?
When is the last time you saw her?
Who is *Name of co-sponsor*?
Have you ever been to the United States?
Have you ever used drugs?
Have you ever had problems with the police?
What are your wedding plans?
Then, she said the words everyone wants to hear... "Felicidades, su visa ha sido aprobada!"
Friday, Feb 26: My fiancé waited for his visa in Juarez. This day, the DHL number showed up online around 3pm Juarez time. When we put the tracking number in on DHL's website, it said that the visa wouldn't be ready to be picked up until Monday in the evening.
Saturday, Feb 27: I checked DHL's website again out of curiosity, and to my surprise it said that the visa was ready to be picked up! This was around 9am Juarez time. I called my fiancé and he immediately went to the DHL Zaragoza to pick it up. I purchased his ticket to Miami as soon as I knew he had the visa in his hand. It was cheaper and more convenient for him to fly from Juarez rather than EL Paso.
Overall, my fiancé and his friend really enjoyed Juarez. They spent a lot of time in the different malls and plazas. They never felt in danger at any point. They walked a lot, took taxis, and took the bus a few times with no problems. We recommend utilizing the buses and avoiding taxi's since they are very expensive.
