My K-1 Visa Appointment was scheduled for 25th of March 2015 at 9:00am.
I turned up at the US Embassy in London at around 8:15am after grabbing a cup of tea at the nearby starbucks before hand. There was a small white visa services tent set up outside the embassy and a couple of lines of people waiting to get in (one much longer than the other). The lines were split into appointment times.
It's worth noting that people with every type of visa appointment will be in these lines and that you should make sure to let the staff know that you are there for a K-1 (immigrant) interview. They might make sure you get in a bit earlier because of that.
The security procedures were pretty much what you would expect at an airport. I showed a guard my passport, DS-160 printout and appointment letter. Bags were given out in the line to put any phones and things from your pockets into. I put this into a tray and walked through the scanner. I then collected the stuff on the other side and walked around to the right and into the entrance. I got in just after 9:00am.
Once inside I lined up again to show someone at reception my printout and they assigned me a ticket number. I walked up the stairs into the waiting area, which looks much like an airport departure gate with lots of chairs. A big screen shows which ticket numbers are currently being seen and which window they should go to.
I waited for maybe half an hour for my ticket number to be displayed, then I took my documents up to the window. I handed over what was asked for along with having my fingerprints scanned (both hands and thumbs). Once I'd handed over everything requested (it took maybe 5 minutes) I was asked to sit down again and wait to be called for the interview section of the appointment.
After another few minutes of waiting I was called to another window for the interview portion. The officer asked me how I was (good). Then she asked who had filed for my visa. She asked my fiancée's name, she asked how we met (I described this in detail), then whether I had been to visit her (yes, for three months). Then a couple of questions about her family, her brother's and sister's names and ages, whether they were married and if I had met them. All easy to answer, no problems.
After that she said that my visa was approved and I would receive it within a couple of weeks.
All a lot easier than I was expecting. Didn't ask to see any other evidence or photos etc. and I was out of the embassy by around 10:00am.  |
