Consulate Review: Manila, Philippines
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : February 26, 2015
Embassy Review : Sharing with you my experience at the US Embassy in Manila. Please note that the times are just estimates.

0545H Waiting in line with the other K1 applicants. There was about 25 of us there including the kids.
0700H They called the K1 to go to the mini tent and line up.
0710H They asked everybody to prepare their DS160, APPT LETTER and PASSPORT
0715H My turn. After they have checked the said requirements, they put a sticker on the back of your passport which states your name, passport number, interview appointment.
0717H Gone through security check. The lady told me I had a musical card. I forgot I had one so I had to exit and give it to the one of the ladies who keep stuff for you (I had to pay 150 pesos but those letters are very important to me)
0720H Back to the security check. I was able to pass through now. Yay!
0730H Ticketing booth. They asked for my DS160 and APPT LETTER. They stapled the queue number there and I got number 7017. I was told to proceed to Door 2, Window 38 and drop my confirmation. I immediately went there and inside, there was one of the "Greeters" who assist you and was collecting the K1 and IV applicants, appointment letters. I just handed it to her and she told me to exit. I waited at the K1, IV area.
0745H My name was called and I wasn't sure if it was really me so I had to wait for them to repeat it. When they repeated the names, I went inside. I think it was window 42. There were 4 of us who were called (3 K1 visas and 1 IV). We went to the window and we were asked to go to the holding area. I was anxious for I didn't know why we were on hold!
0845H They called my name again and was told to proceed to the fingerprinting. I stood in line and waited for my turn. I noticed the other applicants had to go to another window and do a "Data Entry" I remember they were asked when they received the letter from NVC.

• Step 1. Fingerprinting - I was asked to state my name and birthday and proceed to do biometrics. The foreign officer said "Left hand, four fingers. Right hand four fingers. Two thumbs". After that, he was called and told me "one moment" then he told me to proceed to Step 2 and wait at Area "C".

Waited about 20 minutes.

• Step 2. Pre-screening - It was a filipina consul and she had a bright mood. She got my case file and it was in a pink folder and she was also teaching 2 ladies about the application processes. While she was doing that, she asked me:
Name
Birthday
Asked me to give to her my NBI, BIRTH CERTIFICATE, CENOMAR, SLEC Medical Records
Name of Petitioner
How old is he
How old I am
How long have you known each other
How'd u two met each other
What site
Then she was explaining my case to the 2 ladies and the process of a fiancé(e) visa application. She was telling them that I received the letter from NVC and confirmed it with me. I told her, "No, I never received any" and she said jokingly "Oh sorry, the letter's here. I guess they mailed you something else or maybe they're just saving money." And then she was explaining that to the 2 ladies that either the petitioner or beneficiary can get the letter with the case number.

She then asked:
What my petitioner's job is and asked for the petitioners ITR, I-134. I also gave her the W2 and pay stubs but she returned it to me.
If I have travelled outside of the country
How many times
When
How long
What was your purpose
If my petitioner has visited me
How many times and what year
Then she asked pictures of me and my fiancé together. I gave her my binder and she looked through them and said "He looks good. You two look good together. So cute!" And was showing our photos to the 2 ladies. Then she confirmed my address, email address and contact number
She then told me to go to step 3.

Waited about 10 minutes..

• Step 3. Oath taking. I stood in line, waited for my turn, was asked to raise my right hand and do the oath either in english or tagalog. The foreign consul then took my right hand 4 fingers finger print. Proceed to step 4.

Waited around 15 minutes..

1010H
• Step 4. Interview. Contrary to the belief that a consul gets assigned to you before hand, we were just asked to proceed to whatever window is open and be interviewed. At my turn, Window 61 opened and there was the american lady consul with blue eyes.
She asked me to show my queue number.
CO: "7017 right? and that's a K Visa?" "Hang on a second, I'll just get your file." She gave me a pamphlet about domestic violence that it would not affect my application etc etc. Then she gets back.
"Okay, (states last name and first name)"
Me: Yes
CO: Full name?
Me:
CO: Birthday?
CO: Who's petitioning you?
CO: How long have you known each other?
Me: 3 years and almost four months
CO: How did you meet?
Me: Online.
CO: What site?
Me: (states site)
CO: Oh, that's new. Hmm. Who contacted who first?
Me: None. It's just a random site which just pops up people.
CO: Oh so there were no profiles?
Me: Yes.
CO: Do you already have wedding plans?
Me: No.. but everybody's like "your interview is tomorrow! we gotta plan the reception!"
CO: Have you ever been outside the Philippines?
Me: Yes
CO: Where?
Me: In the US.
CO: How many times?
Me: 3
CO: When was it? What did you do?
Me: (states answers)
CO: So your dad is a surgeon?
Me: Yes. He's now a fellow of the ACS.
CO: Oh what is your occupation?
Me: Student
CO: You said you graduated.
Me: Yes, but I continued my studies.
CO: What are you studying now?
Me: Doctor of Pharmacy.
CO: Oh great. How many times has the petitioner visited you?
Me: 5 times.
CO: Wow 5 times. When was this?
Me: Yes (states when)
CO: What is your petitioners job?
Me: Hotel owner and manager.
CO: Oh wow.
Me:
CO: So he's a hotel owner and you're in PharmD... You both are great. (then she looks at the electronic case file again) Can I see photos of you two together and with the family?
Me: (showed photos of the family, me and him, yoga photos with the fiancé)
CO: Is he the one right there?
Me: No, here. (points out my fiancé)
CO: Oh the one in the middle.
Me: Yes. (shows other photos)
CO: Oh you do yoga?
Me: Yes
CO: (flickers through the I-129F packet) There's a giant lizard right here.
Me: (confused) where? I don't remember.
CO: (shows the photo)
Me: Oh that's a crocodile in palawan.
CO: Where does the petitioner live? In what state?
Me: Washington
CO: So your NBI is clear, your medical is clear, no marriages... (checks the electronic file) Okay let me just see your entries to the US. (stares at the computer intently). Okay, I see it here.. (then she looks at my papers). I have to stamp on your tourist visa. Let me see if I could do that right here. (then she wents inside and comes back with a black square stamp on my tourist visa which is still wet so she was blowing on it). Sorry, I don't wanna mess up your passport.
Me: Haha that's fine. We'll just let it dry up.
CO: You're application is approved and you can now proceed to Step 5. They're going to instruct you about the releasing of the passport.
Me: Thank you! Have a great day!

Waited again...around 20 minutes.

10:30H
• Step 5. Releasing - the guy told me, "Do you already know?" I said, "What?". "Do you already know?" I said "No?" Then he said "Do you already know that your visa is cancelled?" I was like "What??" He said "Your tourist visa is cancelled because you'll be issued a new one." I said "Awww, bye tourist visa.." He said "Hahaha that's fine you're gonna live in the US now". He then told me to wait for the text message from 2GO.

And I went out of the embassy at 10:40. Yay!
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
