Event Description

Embassy Review : I had my interview today and my visa was approved! After two years of stress and constantly trying to practice unachievable patience, my nerves are FINALLY calm. Here is my experience, hope it helps. I have very mixed feelings about the result of the interview...read on and you will understand....what are the odds that this would happen!!!

I will start by saying that I was SO nervous, more nervous than I remember ever being. The day before my interview, my mind was racing with a million things I felt I needed to do to prepare. I followed the suggestions on "Ideas on how to organize your interview documents" and had a total of six (6) folders with me: AOS; Proof of Relationship; Proof of Marriage (photos etc); Appt Letter, Loomis confirmation; Birth/Marriage/Police certificate copies; and DS260 confirmation. I also brought my wedding album. I had SO much proof with me, and guess what they asked to look at.....nothing! (Well nothing "additional", they looked at my appt letter, Loomis, medical exam, passport and photos, but none of my proof!) Anyway the morning of, I couldn't eat, and I felt extremely nauseous, I was very sure I was going to throw up! (but didn't!)

I live in Montreal, so I knew exactly where I was going from my house. I stopped at Medisys to pick up my documents at about 7:30AM and then my husband drove me to the consulate. My appointment was scheduled at 10:30AM, but based on past reviews, I decided to go early, and I arrived there at about 7:45AM. There was no line outside, and I went right in the doors. A greeter asked to see my appointment letter and my Loomis confirmation. Went through security and they made me check in my water bottle. I didn't bring my cell phone.

I entered the waiting room for the elevator, and I was about the 6-7th person to arrive. About 4 people were seated in the chairs closest to the elevator (fellow VJ'ers?) but I was able to get a chair closely as well. Waited there about 15 minutes when the guard came down gave us instructions for the elevator. All I could think was, "Back left Back left Back left!" and one lady beat me to it. When the doors opened, I was third in line to meet the greeter to show her my appointment letter and I got #2 for immigrant visa. I was called immediately (didn't even have to sit down) to window #2. The lady asked for my medical exam, my passport and my recent photos. She took my fingerprints and she was extremely pleasant, but not too friendly (I'm sure they are instructed not to be too warm with applicants!) I was at the window for max 10 minutes. She told me to have a seat and I would be called for my interview in a few minutes. This was about at 8:20AM, just over 30 minutes after I arrived.

I sat in the waiting room, my nerves finally calming down. I started getting hungry and purchased a cookie from the vending machine, went to the bathroom and tried to stay calm. At about 8:45AM, I was called to window #7 for my interview. The lady was pleasant, not intimidating at all, and very professional. Here is the breakdown of how the interview unfolded:

-Raised right hand and swore oath
Q1: Did you visit the United States in September of last year (2014)?
-My answer, "No I tried to enter but they denied me entry because they wanted me to wait until I had my visa before I went to visit my husband"
Q2: Did you try to re-enter after that attempt? (No)
Q3: Have you ever been arrested or been convicted of a crime? (No)
Q4: Where does your husband live?
Q5: Is this the first marriage for you? For your husband?
Q6: What does your husband do?
Q7: Have you ever been arrested or been convicted of a crime?
Q8: In September when you tried to enter the US, what happened? (Tried to enter, denied entry until my visa came through)
Q9: So you have never been convicted of a crime? (NO!!)
Q10: Your denial entry into the US, was that a one time thing? (Yes!)

Interviewer: "I am approving your visa. But I have to let you know there may be a delay."
ME: YAY! Wait...WHY?!
Interviewer: "When you were denied entry at the border in September, the agent made a mistake when making the report. They put you down as being a criminal"
ME: WHAT?!
Interviewer: "From my questions today, I believe it was a mistake on their part. But that will have to be removed before I can process the visa. And that will probably cause a delay"
ME: HOW LONG?
Interviewer: "Well our turnaround time to get your passport back is 2 weeks, but this delay might take another week"
ME: Yay I'm so happy but... man, that kind of sucks. javascript:emoticon('')
Interviewer: "You will receive an e-mai when your passport is ready to be picked up. Here is your Welcome to USA Letter"
ME: THANK YOU SO MUCH!

And I was done. By 9AM, I was in and out of there within 1hr and 15 mins. My interview took maybe 5-7 minutes. She didn't look at any of my folders or proof. (And apparently in my file I am a criminal?!)
Obviously my husband and I are ecstatic but pretty peeved that the border agent could make such a major mistake and my visa is being delayed - again. My husband is going to call the border tomorrow and make a complaint. Hopefully the delay won't be so bad.

Overall, I was really happy with the experience at the consulate. (The border agent mistake obviously had nothing to do with them!) I was nervous and stressed but I think that is normal. Everyone from the guards to the greeters to the interviewers helped calm my nerves, they were all very pleasant, polite and professional. No one was interrogative or intimidating in my experience.

I am in absolute awe that my visa journey is almost at its end!!! Thank you VJ administrators and Users......SOOO much help came from this website and the experience and knowledge of others, I honestly cannot thank you all enough! javascript:emoticon('')

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
