Consulate Review: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : September 17, 2012
Embassy Review : We arrived in Rio on Saturday the 8th. We stayed at the Diamond Hotel (we recommend staying elsewhere, because the cost was way too high for the quality of services received). On Monday, the 10th, I had an appt. with the doctor. I went to Dr. Joaquim, but some time ago I was in touch with his secretary, Joice. She is super organized and always answered my emails, and I sent a lot of emails to her too. Well, we arrived at the clinic at 8:50 am, and gave her my OB/GYN exam and my vaccination record; everything was ok, so she referred us to the radiology clinic close by, that was completed, and by 10 am we were already back at the doctor's office again. My appointment was at 11 am. The exam went very quickly. Dr. Joaquim is super nice too. After that, we went to the bank and got money to pay the doctor and returned to pay him. We had to wait another 1/2 hour for the guy who was taking my blood. We returned in the afternoon and everything was ready. So, this step was ok.

We arrived at the consulate early in the morning on the 12th, at around 6:20 am, behind a line of 5 men already waiting at the door. At about 7am we were allowed to enter, went through a metal detector and they scanned our bags and we were then directed to the second floor, filled out two forms and waited. In the order of arrival, we were called to the booth to deliver the documents and medical examination. For me, I had to also turn in the police background check from the SSP, because I sent a letter from the Civil Police, but they required one from the SSP, so I needed to deliver the letter along with the doctor's sealed exam report. So far so good. We waited a little longer and the consul called us by my name. She was a pretty girl, smiling and friendly. She asked if I wanted to do the interview in English or Portuguese. She wanted to know where we met and I also told when my husband came to Brazil to see me for the first time. She also asked if we would have another wedding ceremony in USA. She asked when my husband was in Brazil for the first time before he met me and how he learned Portuguese. Then she asked for my husband's passport and said it was good that he was there and she made a copy of his passport. It was really simple, because after that she said everything was perfect and that we were to pay the SEDEX and wait for my stamped passport, because we were approved. If all the documents have been sent and if everything is in order, there is no reason to be nervous; we just have to tell the truth.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
