Consulate Review: London, United Kingdom
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 15, 2017
Embassy Review : This is a review of our experience with the London Embassy.

Unlike a lot of the reviews I've read we are IR1 DCF. I am the American Citizen wife and have lived in the UK for 11 yrs after receiving my Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.

We were delayed in making our appointment waiting for results from Knightsbridge due to some complications with my husbands x rays. He had to have the full TB panel done, which took an additional 6-8 weeks. During that time we could have gone to interview but there was no guarantee they would let my husband keep his passport and we needed to travel back to the US during September with or without his visa in place. So we made the choice to cancel our appointment and reschedule for the 10th of Oct.

We arrived at London Victoria around 9 am and made our way via the tube toward the Embassy, thank you google maps!

When we arrived we saw the blue VISA's tent at the side of the building next to the park. We stood in line with around 10 people and when we got to the front they saw it was an immigrant visa and asked us to step aside and wait another 10 min before coming back up. They were quite friendly and we just did as we were told.

After about 7 min or so they called us right over. I told them that we had submitted the email for me to be allowed to enter with my husband, but that we were aware that sometimes names dont show up on the list. The lady looked at the list of people who were suppose to be there that day and said no, you aren't on the list, but hold on a second.... She consulted with the other lady on the desk with her briefly and said ok no problem, spouses are allowed. She added my name to my husband's paper and put 4-5 stickers on the side with his "number" on, before sending us to the security section.

A gentleman was standing about 10 ft away and waved us over, He checked my husband's DS260 and both our passports then sent us into the security building after the previous person was finished. They appear to do only one at a time in the security building, its really small. Inside is your typical airport screening stuff and we were directed to put our metal and bags on the scanner and through the metal detector we went. No problem which was a relief for my husband cause now he could put his belt back on lol.

We went out the door and followed the path around the building to the right... past a couple other official type people to the entrance. We entered the building and there was a reception desk with stairs up to the left. We handed our passports and DS 260 paper to the lady on reception and she took one of the stickers and then sent us up the stairs.

Inside the hall, there were lots of windows and lots of people in a large waiting room area. The back half of the seats were pretty full, but the person there asked if we were here for Immigrant or Non Immigrant visa and sent us to the front of the room where the seats were far more empty.

There is a huge screen with numbers listed. Who is being called to which window and who is being served. A blurb about what paperwork you'll need and other advice is scrolled on another screen while you wait for your number to be called.

After about 5 min or so, our number was called and we went up to one of the windows. The gentleman there was polite and professional. He asked for various documents, all copies and originals. These included His Birth Certificate and copy, previous marriage information for him but not mine, our marriage license and Police Certificate. Then he moved onto the I864 and asked if i was a sole sponsor. I said no, I've been a home maker for the past 10 yrs so my dad is going to be our joint sponsor. So he asked for my dad's I864 and proof. I had brought all 3 yrs of tax return and 1099's ( dad is retired military and has SS as well ..) He asked for Only the last year, to keep his file neat. They would ask for more if needed.

He chatted just briefly asking when we wanted to travel, to which we said As soon as you guys say Yes LOL... We haven't booked flights because we wanted to be certain before making arrangements. He then asked if we had signed up for the courier, which we said we had. He said OK, go around the corner to window 15 and pay your visa fee, then have a seat and we will call you up again when its time.

So we went around the corner and there was a LONG line of people waiting to be seen by someone, we didn't quite see who or what they were waiting for but asked if they were in line to pay at 15 and they said no, so we skirted past them to the window. The lady asked Cash or Card... paid by Uk card and that was that. She said show this receipt to the interviewer when you are called.

We went back to the waiting area and settled in to wait. We weren't seated more than 5-6 min when our number popped up again.. Please go to window 17. 1-13 are in the front by the waiting room and 14- whatever are around the corner down a little corridor. We went down the corridor to Window 17 and another Nice gentleman was waiting. We handed over the receipt and DS260 again and he asked us both to raise our right hands and swear to tell the truth, then took my husband's finger prints again to be sure they matched the ones who gave the documents.

Then he looked through the file a second and asked me, You've been here a while, over 10 yrs, Why do you want to go back now? Between my husband and I we explained that He was retiring from his current job and we were ready to head home. We also explained that my dad was ready for my to be closer to home again.

He asked what our plans were when we got back. Where would we live. I told him we owned a home over there and had established a bank account. I asked if he wanted proof, he said no, thats ok, we just need something plausible for the folder, to show you wont be living in a box somewhere.

He asked briefly about my dad who is our joint sponsor, mentioning that he has a grandson as a dependent, we chatted briefly about some personal things regarding that and that was about it.

He said ok, Great, you're approved! I said wow .. you mean like Welcome to the US Mr McNally ? He said Yes thats right! You can expect your passport to be ready for collection in 10 -16 working days.

He then did some writing on things etc and told us to be sure we brought the CD with my husband's Xray with us because His medical indicated that he had TB at some point, but had been treated and was clear and they may want to review the x ray, but dont worry, He has been approved. We questioned this because its flat out wrong.... He has never had nor been treated for TB, but the guy said he wasn't a DR and such. We plan to have his own GP write a letter confirming that He has never had nor been treated for TB but have no idea if it will be needed or useful.

Then we were out the door. Less than 42 min from entering the line to security and out the door to find a celebratory lunch!

Three days later on the 13th we received an email that his passport and documents will be ready to collect on the Monday ! So yay! All sorted!

Now to empty the house and book some flights!

Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
