experience with everything up to the interview was horrible. will get to that in a minute.
note to those applying for CR-1, you do not need to wait in line. outside of AIT, there is an entrance for american citizen services, and then a line for visas. for immigrant visas, you can just let the guard know that your interview appt is at whatever time, and they should let you through; no need to wait in line with non-immigrant visa interviewers. phone checked at a cubicle and a security check for bags and purses.
the negative experience part:
we turned in all our documents that we were told to prepare at window 8 (everything requested on that letter from NVC/AIT). this part was still okay. we were then called to window 5, where an older taiwanese lady officer had our folder and was reviewing everything. she was INCREDIBLY rude.
her: (rudely) why did you not put it into the order that we requested!!? your HHR is not here where it belongs behind the passport bio page. why didn't you put it in the right order? now i can't find it anywhere.
me: i did. i did it according to the sheet that was sent me. showed her the page from NVC that had the list of all necessary docs to bring to interview. (i even numbered the items and highlighted).
her: (rudely) no, that is not from us. it was sent to (my husband's) email address. who is that?
husband: that is my email address.
her: (rudely) well, did you read it? if you read it, you would have seen the list of documents and to put it in that order. did you even bother to read it??
husband: yes, i read it.
her: well, then if you read it, then i wouldn't have to be sorting through all these papers now. where is the HHR??
at this point, we realise that we did not include the HHR, rather the 戶å£æ°‘ç°¿ instead.
husband: i'm sorry, we don't have that page, then.
her: (rudely, and roughly handling the papers) if you didn't bring the HHR as requested in the email, then all of what we're doing right now is a waste of time. if you read the email, then you would have seen to bring it.
keep in mind, this is all via the intercom, so everyone behind us was pretty much hearing all of this. she was rude as heck and i had half a mind to raise my voice back at her (of course, i did not). she finally did tone it down a bit, when she saw that we had prepared everything else (and more), except that we did not have the HHR. she asked some questions about us throughout this whole document-sorting process.
interview portion:
our interviewer was quite nice, and did speak some mandarin. this part was fine. one thing that i find weird is that the interview also takes place in that same large room, via an intercom, with everyone else essentially listening in on your conversation. NO DOORs, and no privacy. just lots of little partitioned windows so you can't see the person in the next window, but you can certainly hear them.
side note of annoyance:
obviously, we were given the "denied pending further documentation" sheet. however, both the lady at the window AND the interviewer both said that i needed to provide "proof of domicile." when i told the interviewer that i had already included a letter and all the documentation for that in the NVC packet - and also showed him a copy printout of the same thing on hand - he said, "oh, then it probably hasn't been reviewed yet."
hmm, i'm sorry, but if it hasn't been reviewed yet, then why am i needing to provide further documentation??? and why am i being denied because of it?? ridiculous. the interviewer said that i can just email AIT to let them know that that documentation was already turned in. (seriously? then what did i turn in before??)
anyway, that was my experience with AIT and the interview process. slight annoyances, an extremely rude taiwanese lady officer, and a nice interviewer.
