My fiance, his daughter (7-yrs) and I arrived at around 6am and were close to the front of the line. At 7am they began letting everyone into the embassy. We were initially called up to the window once inside and verified who we were and why we were there. We sat back down and around 30 minutes later we were called up again. This time it was for his fingerprints and to confirm his telephone number as well as mine. Then the waiting began. We were not allowed to bring anything to drink inside and around hour 3 could really have used a glass of water. Unfortunately none was available as the water cooler was empty. We were told it would be filled later. My fiance's daughter was asking for water again at hour 4-1/2. 4 5-gal bottles were brought to the cooler but not opened. We asked if we could get her some water but again were told no. Hour 5 rolls around and we were finally called to the window for the interview. About 30-seconds after talking, they asked me to have a seat with his daughter while they asked him some questions. These included:
1) How did we meet?
2) If he'd met my mother?
3) If he'd met my father? if not, why not
4) What he planned on doing once in the U.S. as far as a career
5) What I did as a career
6) What my telephone number was
7) How was the relationship with his daughter and I (as the person asked him this, he was also watching me and then stopped and said, "No need to answer, it's a close relationship. I've been watching." :-)
There were a couple more but I can't recall exactly what. He was then told that even though he submitted and brought an official raised seal copy of his divorce decree, brought the paper that the announcement was made in, etc. that they still needed to verify the divorce was actually written in the books and they had not done that yet. We were told that we would be contacted in 2-3 weeks (what they told me after talking to him but they told him 15 days) and he would have to come back to the consulate. When they called me up to the window, I literally was asked nothing about the relationship, only told that they needed to confirm his divorce and we would know more in 2-3 weeks. I was told that there was no need for me to return, it wouldn't be necessary so I was free to return home.
We both left a little (well, a LOT confused) We received a paper that simply stated our file was in need of further administrative review before a decision could be made. Although there were many things on the form to check-mark what was missing, needed, etc, none were checked aside from this "administrative review" box. I thought that was a good sign all things considered as the other requests were "insufficient evidence of relationship", "need additional support information" and things of that nature. Soooooo....we left and were starving, thirsty and taken aback a bit. Praying for good news sooner than later. Oh, and were told that we have the incredible pleasure of calling CIVA to check the status in the mean time. Hmmmmmm.... |

Our appt was at 7:45am and we arrived at 7:30. We were called back on time (waiting area was virtually empty!) A nice lady walked us wayyyyyy back to the interview room. We made small talk about the weather, etc. She was flipping through our file and verifying data with my husband. Questions she asked him were things like "What are your parents names?" "What city were you born in?" "What city was your daughter born in?" "What was the date you last entered the US?" Very general with no questions being asked to me, the US Citizen. She then said she was going to take a moment and remove a few duplicate items from our file. The last question asked was, "So you met while you were volunteering at a dental clinic, huh?" I replied yes and we talked a little about the foundation I volunteered with. After that my husband and step daughter were welcomed to the USA and we were told how things would work when we needed to remove conditions on their 2-yr green cards. She did ask if there was anything else we wanted to add to our file after we were approved. We handed her all of the new info we brought to for the interview at that point. She never looked at it prior to making her decision to approve. We were beyond happy!!!! Everyone was very nice and it was actually a very pleasant time! Interviewed on Sept 18th and green cards have now been mailed Sept 23! Woo Hoo!!!
On a side note, we were not made aware that we could have used his EAD card to reinstate his expired drivers license that expired with the i-94 form. Apparently, once you have your EAD, the State of Michigan will honor the expiration date of the EAD card as your new expiration date on the Driver's License. Fortunately we only had to wait less than 2-months for AOS approval. Just thought I'd mention this in case others are in the same or similar situation. |
