Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

I (foreign beneficiary married to US citizen) had my interview for AoS (concurrent I-130 and I-485) and could not have been more pleasantly surprised. My case had moved extremely slowly and only advanced when I submitted service requests, but at least we made it past our two-year anniversary, so I received the permanent residency. I was scheduled for 9:00 AM, got there at around 8:30 AM and I was called in at 9:20 AM by Officer Anderson, who treated us with utmost respect and kindness. The interview probably lasted for about 25 minutes.

As we entered his office, he asked us to remain standing while taking the oath, and subsequently invited us to sit. He requested our id's, marriage certificate and my birth certificate, and went over our I-485 information with each one of us. Following, he took notes while asking us when and how we met, when we started dating, when we got married, who attended our wedding and so on. He delved into some details more than others (for example, he asked why we had no family witness at our wedding, and why we did not have any photos of the court ceremony) but he was not overly inquisitive about anything and mostly satisfied by our answers. He then asked for evidence, and when we attempted to provide the originals for the documents of our affidavit of support, he said that it had already been approved and that was not necessary, so we provided our joint lease agreements, certificate of title for our car, health insurance cards, bank statements, utility bills, retirement accounts and life insurance beneficiary designations.

After that, he said that it was clear to him that we knew each other for a long time and that he was recommending us for approval. He then shook our hands, and escorted out of the hall, explaining that you need a card both to go in and out, to which I jokingly asked if that was to preclude us from escaping. By the time I got home at 10:00 AM, my status had been updated to show that the card was being produced.
