My husband arrived early at the embassy and was the first in line to go in and be called. One guy was pulled out of the line and sent to store his cell phone in a locker or in his car: another reminder to not bring a cell phone to your interview!
When they called his name he went first to one glass window and gave his fingerprints and passport. Then he had to go to a waiting area for a little while. When the CO was ready, he sat in a sort of glassed area across from the CO. There was a microphone to communicate. The CO went through each of the papers in our file with my husband.
At one point, the CO turned off the microphone and turned to a colleague to talk for a couple of minutes, but my husband of course couldn't hear what they were saying. When the CO came back, he asked my husband a couple of questions: "How did you meet? Where are you going to live in the U.S.? What are you planning to do for work? What does your wife do?" I had the interview at 1:30 on a Tuesday and went there together with my wife. We arrived an hour early and there was only one person waiting in front of us. Since it was raining they put up a little tent you could wait under.
At 1:30 the guard came out and asked who had an appointment. The guy in front of us had an appointment later in the day which moved us up to first in the line. Then my wife was NOT allowed in because she was not on the invitation. When inside I first had to pass through airport-like security. DON'T bring any electronics as this can void your entire application.
Inside I had to wait for the window to open. Once it opened there was a friendly woman that checked if I had all the required documents. Since I was the first person to use a new online filing system this took a little longer than normal. After the clerk collected all my documents I was asked to sit back down.

We came to the interview together, but the American fiancee wasn't allowed to enter the embassy. They said "Applicants only," which wasn't what we were expecting from earlier reviews.
But, it otherwise went very smoothly, they started letting people inside at least 15 min early, and all was done within 45 min. Obviously leave your phone at home, or in a locker somewhere (train station, one of the museums?)
They let in the immigrant visa people first (calling them by name), then the non-immigrant visa people. They didn't look at our evidence of relationship. We were a bit worried that they would want to see tax returns (we only had an employee letter for the evidence of employment/salary), but it was fine.

Fast interview. Two pieces of advice: 1. Just don't bring electronic devices to the embassy and 2. be sure to speak enough English to make it through the interview. javascript:emoticon(' ')
You will be interviewed where there are other people being interviewed present, so be prepared for that. This is not a private interview for the IR-1/CR-1 visa.
