Just sharing my medical experience, I'm not sure if this is the proper forum, but oh well, I'd like for people who live in South Brazil to have an idea of costs etc of Medical here, since we have only 1 doctor option.

I went to see doctor Mirian T. M. Carvalho, the only doctor that attends in South Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná) monday august 14 2006 at 15:30. She was late but she was very nice. She asked me a bunch of questions about my health, if I take any medicine, if I've done drugs, if I've had diseases, my family medical history too, then she asked me to take off my clothes and even tho she asked me previously to take with me the gynecological preventive exam, she still examined like all of me :P

After all the interrogatory she asked me to take a chest x-ray, blood test for HIV and syphilis, and 5 shots and then come back the next day 18:30.

The shots required:

- Influenza

- Yellow Fever

- Varicella

- Hepatitis B

- VTV (I believe it's a triple vaccine for Mumps, Rubella and Measles)

After that I had to go back with the results, which was the next day. I only came back on august 15 with the x-ray, blood results and the 3 free shots taken. Since I couldn't find the varicella or the influenza shot for free I decided to take somewhere else, so after I looked for them and had to pay for them, I took them on august 16, made a copy of my vaccination card and sent Doctor Mirian by fax and then she sent me the sedex with the sealed medical envelope that I picked up august 17. So pretty much in my case the medical took me 4 days.

Total cost of medical:

* I had to do the gynecological before seeing her, I paid R$ 120,00 including the preventive test

* Doctor Mirian's fee is the equivalent to US$ 100.00, paid in Reais it was R$ 220,00

* X-Ray R$ 35,00

* Blood Test R$ 56,00

* Yellow Fever, Hepatitis B and VTV shots - free

* Influenza shot R$ 30,00

* Varicella shot R$ 80,00

Both shots I had to pay I went to 4 different places to see which one was cheaper, but the difference is like R$ 5,00 - R$ 10,00

* Sedex with medical sealed envelope R$ 11,00

Total of medical expenses not counting gas money to go from one place to another, among other expenses was:

R$ 552,00

I had it a bit cheaper since I got all my vaccines for free. Also, Dr. Joaquim in Rio never asked me take anything off, although I did have to pay for my doctor to get a pap smear done, which cost me R$80,00.

Yeah, I forgot to point out that if you have ''plano de saúde'' you will probably have the blood test and the x-ray for free. Also the vaccines she asked me was based on my health history, since my mother couldn't find all my vaccination cards I probably took some I had already taken. So the medical can be cheaper.

Good luck to future brazilians going through this hellprocess :thumbs:

:thumbs:

Hi, our visa is in the process of moving between the State Dept and Consulate in Rio. I saw somewhere on the embassy's website a list of doctors to choose from. Therefore, I take it you can't have any doctor do the exams it ahs to be one from the list, right?

Nessa,

you mentioned you had to go back to the doctor's office the next day. My fiancee lives in a small town in Minas Gerais so Belo Horizonte would be the clostest option for her, especially if the exam is a 2-day process. Is it standard to have to go back to the doctor's office?

Also, is the medical exam done before the interview? I have read posts about taking it at the embassy/consulate. I know there are certified doctors in Rio where the interview will be so I'm wondering if there is some way to do the exam and the itnerview all in one trip.

Any thoughts?
