About Me

Why I am the only member who got the GC before getting an SSN...:

I waited 3 weeks for my SSN card in the mail after POE, like the instructions I received with my CR1 visa said. Nothing came.

05/07: I went to the local SS office, talked to an extremely unfriendly agent who told me my legal status has to be verified because my name doesn't show up in the USCIS database. He was talking about SAVE, that SSA has to check before issuing an SSN. He said the verification could take 4 weeks, or longer.

05/08: went to the USCIS with an Infopass appointment to ask what was going on. A barely helpful officer told me the CBP made a mistake when inputting my data at POE, and only they could correct it.

05/08: went to CBP, discovered that my name was severely misspelled in the data sent by the airline to the CBP, and that the officer who took care of my entry failed to correct it. Therefore, my arrival record is under a wrong last name.

05/09: called the CBP for update, and was told that they cannot correct the arrival record, because it was an immigrant first entry. Supposedly, it goes into a USCIS database and they don't have access to fix it. CBP supervisor is supposed to get in touch with USCIS supervisor to find a way to fix. I was asked to call back in a week.

05/11: after gathering information on SAVE processes, I learnt that most manual verification can be solved in 3-5 days. So I called the local SS office to know if there was any update: I was told that my name was not in the "pending verification" list, which indicates that an SSN was generated.

05/14: went to the SS office again, and was given my number. Was told the card was sent on 05/09 and it can take 2 weeks to arrive.

05/14: went to the California Department of Motor Vehicles to apply for a driver's license. CA DMV is required to make a SAVE check, however I encountered no problem this time when applying. I don't know if the check happens later in the process but I expected it to be in the beginning (I got a temporary license).
