Interesting: All but one Ethiopian restaurant are located in the same zip code. Furthermore, 9 out of the total of 12 are located on the very same street: between 1025 and 1076 South Fairfax, to be precise. I suppose it would be a safe assumption that this particular area houses the majority of LA's Ethiopian community.

yes they do, ET. i've eaten at two of those restaurants before. there's little markets and shops all on the same few blocks as well. one of the worst meals i ever ate! maybe i ordered the wrong food... but ethiopian food was the one cuisine i can say i didn't like one single thing i tasted! i'd definitely give it a try again. third time is a charm, right? so if you can recommend particular dishes? i'd love that!

Ethiopian food is quite different from what westeners are used to. I love it for the most part. What did you have there?

i have a pretty sophisticated palate so i don't think it has to do with not liking ethnic foods. i just didn't enjoy the flavor of the injera, nor any of the stews we ordered. this was about five years ago so i can't remember what exactly we had besides the bread. i'd definitely give it another try though.

Injera is definetely something that needs a little getting used to. I remember that the first few times I had Ethiopian food, I had a hard time with it. It was basically too darn spicy. Then there are, of course, Ethiopian restaurants that I have been to that just simply sucked. Injera, for example, is often not made the way it is supposed to be made. The flour that goes into injera traditionally is rather expensive here and sometimes close to impossible to get. So, people substitute and that makes a rather big difference in both the texture and the taste.

The stews are tricky. The Ethiopian staple "doro wot" is not exactly my favorite. I prefer the lighter stews, if any. What's usually really good are "tibs" (sauteed beef or lamb with jalapeno peppers and onion) and kitfo (minced beef in spiced butter and typically served with some "eib" - white crumbly cheese - this can be had raw, medium or well cooked ~ if you have the stomach for it, try it raw. I love that stuff). And then I like the veggies. Especially "gomen" which are collard greens with lots of garlic. The cabbage, potato and carrot mix that is quite typical is very good too.

And have some traditional tea or coffee. It's to die for.
