JURY DUTY SUMMONS [merged threads]

Okay Guys, I am freaking out to the teeth at the moment. So I just got my daily alerts from USPS about incoming mails and i see a mail for JURY DUTY. I am not yet a citizen and my assumption is that I should not be getting such mails. Does it mean that I am registered on a Federal database as a USC or what? I am not about to play games about this because I know that is a deport-able offence. 

 

Any ideas guys?

From what I understand, they pick potential jurors from the DMV database. The summons will probably have a questionnaire asking if you are a citizen and obviously, you need to answer "no". I think you'll still need to go to the court and prove that you are not a citizen to the clerk and it should be fine after that.

First, take a deep breath. No need to "freak out".

Second, they sometimes send them to people who are not eligible. It happens, depending on how exactly they draw up their lists (usually the DMV as noted above). Just don't claim to be a USC and let them know.

 

There are some circumstances where people have incorrectly registered to vote through the DMV, but this is not common and likely not the situation here. You typically would have received mail or a voting registration card if you had actually been registered to vote.

Send it back, mark it non-USC. Don't freak out, they go by different databases, registered voters is one (you're hopefully not in this, you can look it up online), & people who have Drivers Licences is another (I'm assuming you're in this one).

I have never received any sort of correspondence regarding voting. How do i look it up online though?

Depends on your state. Google "am I registered to vote in (your state)".

 

I live in TX, this is the website I use to look it up.

In the past, there have been many occurrences where immigrants mistakenly selected to register to vote when they applied for driver's licenses (read the link from a law firm's website that I posted below). I agree that you should look into if you somehow were automatically checked to register to vote. Hopefully this is not the case.

When my husband gets those I write in big letters "not a citizen", then I circle it and put arrows around it and send it right back to them.

I got summoned last summer. I just called and told them I wasn't a US citizen and they were like cool bye! I was like do u need my greencard number or anything and she was like nope you're good.

My mother received the same thing and she is a green card holder. You can ignore( that's what my mom did) or you can fill out the questionnaire that you are not  US citizen. Nothing to worry about

When I received a jury summons I had to send proof I wasn't a citizen (I know for a fact I that I am not registered to vote) after declining for that reason.

I think it's probably more prudent to send it back.  In some counties they have been known to call people who didn't show up on the posted date and demand to know why they weren't there.  Saves hassle and maybe future summons if you let them know you are not eligible.
