Andrew Cuomo says America ‘was never that great,’ drawing gasps

The Cuomo's are having a tough week.

President Trump’s political knack, such as it is, is his ability to make his opponents overreach — to dangle bait in front of them and hope they take it.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) may have just swallowed it whole.

Appearing at a bill-signing ceremony in New York City, Cuomo took on Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan — ostensibly to build up his anti-Trump bona fides as he faces a primary challenge from former “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon. But he may have protested a little too hard.

“We’re not going to make America great again; it was never that great,” Cuomo said, drawing audible gasps, apparently out of surprise, and some applause. “We have not reached greatness. We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.”

he's right. america has never been 'great' for all americans. it would be one thing if trump's slogan was 'make america great'. tacking on that 'again' can be interpreted many ways, but none of them good for the the country as a whole. the entire premise of #maga is a means to divide the country. case in point.

i was thinking more in terms of civil rights but if you want to go into class division and demonizing of the poor, we can go there too.

I know a lot of folks from a lot of different cultures or ethnicities that bust their behinds everyday and have been successful not expecting a handout from the government.  Not really sure how their civil rights were violated, they were given a equal opportunity to succeed, some failed at times, but never stopped trying.  What a crappy country this America is (he said sarcastically).

I never was very fond of the Cuomos, however. America doesn't exist in a bubble of great vs not that great. On the one hand, we never stopped being 'great' (as in America is whatever you want it to be) and on the other we are not as 'great' as some think. We are an ever evolving experiment as a nation of individuals from all different backgrounds, religions, and philosophies united under the goals our founders laid out. We are not a perfect nation, and we'd do well to solve the flaws, or at least care enough to work on them.

How is it not reality?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Perhaps YOU view it that way.  But more has been done in the past year to unite America than was ever done in the previous “administration of division”.  Hands down.

Yes, do tell us how it’s just a thought, but not reality.

Amazing, ain’t it?  The number of people claiming America isn’t great, or promising to leave if Trump was elected, and yet here they are, still around, still complaining.
