Curious - where to find info about income, taxes, etc in the US?

Hi!

I currently live in the UK a handful of miles away from Oxford. I work in logistics and make around £40,000 a year, dropping to about £2500 a month according to this great salary tool I use here in the UK. I was wondering - I will be moving (if my VISA goes through) to Connecticut, is there any way I can find out the average wages of jobs similar to mine there, what living costs are and average incomes in a certain area? I've had a look around but not found too much myself.

Also - I understand taxes are much different in the US to the UK - here income taxes are taken out from the source of your income and you only get involved if it's wrong. Is the US similar in this way?

Thanks in advance! :)

salary.com gives salary ranges. depending on where you are moving it may or may not be terribly accurate. theres a bunch of others if you google' salary calculators'.

taxes are taken out of your check. on average1/3 of it goes to various state and federal taxes. you file a tax return at the beginning of the year for the previous year and either owe more money or get a refund, based on how much you paid vs owe.
