Hello, my wife and I currently live in MA and submitted our I-751 petition in December. We are moving to CA in June for a new job and won't have a permanent address for a few months while we look for housing. How long do you recommend we wait until we notify USCIS of our move and what are the consequences of the move on our application?  Thanks in advance!

Well no matter what you have to update your address with USCIS. You have 10 days (from what I remember) and in the end they don't care that you're looking for housing. It's one of the responsibilities of a permanent resident to notify Uscis when they move. 

 

You can change the address via online form. 

 

For example, if you don't update the address and you might get a rfe that you won't respond to - your petition will be denied.

I would update USCIS with every address you get, even if it may be for a couple of months. Once you get a new address, you can update it again. Costs you nothing to do it.

I agree with @Roel.  You need to make sure your mail is forwarded to a place where you can access it.  I would re-direct it BEFORE you are "in between" locations.

You have to notify within 10 days of moving. What I would do in your case is rent a mailbox at the post office or even a UPS store where you are going.

The issue is even though you submit address change, they will still send you everything on old address. There are thousands of cases where this happened. USCiS is just not good at this and they evantually lost so many green cards. Just saying.

Yep to both. When we did our cross country move, we made our home address my mom's for several months (who we did in fact live with for some of that time). If you have a family member or close friend in the area, that might be an option for you until you've found a more permanent residence.

I'm sure it has happened. Mail forwarding exists for a reason though.

Even after mail forwarding they dont forward it. Telling that from personal experience.

So are you advising the OP to not report an address change because you had a bad experience with mail delivery?

I have forwarded my mail with USPS several times......it has always worked perfectly...

Problem is USPS doesn't forward USCIS mail.  I think that's how it is with all official gov't mail, but I'm not sure.

Hmmm....then the only choice is to register the address change with USCIS....not much else one can do.

change your address every time you move and keep an eye on the case of your status online. If they send something, you'll probably see a notification for it, and if you don't get the paper mail, you can ask USCIS to resend it. 
I did still get USCIS mail at the old address even though I updated my address, and it cannot be forwarded.
