I got my naturalization letter today and they are asking me to bring my:

"Any evidence of Selective Service Registration"

Well, I don't have this.

I became a Resident in 2011 and was born in 1979, since the card was issued prior to my birthday I was 31 when I became a resident.

Selective Service Registration only applies to males 18 to 25 I thought.

What am I missing?

04/2006 - came to US as L1 employee

04/2010 - got married

11/2010 - submitted AOS package (I-130, I-485, I-765)

05/2011 - Welcome letter arrived in the mail

11/2017 - Filed for naturalization (Online Houston office)

11/2017 - Biometrics

06/2018 - Interview (passed)

06/2018 - Case approved notification

weird they even asked you, because i was also over 27yo when i got my green card and wasn't required to proof i had signed up for selective service.

I was looking into a job after my naturalization and for that i needed the selective service letter, but it took weeks to get that letter back

What you have to do is get a letter saying that you are exempt from being registered for selective service. I also became a resident after 26 and have a letter saying I’m exempt. I did this in preparation for citizenship, when I apply.

You're not missing anything. It's boilerplate and some female users here have reported receiving that request.  If it doesn't apply to you, you don't need it.

Actually, you don't have to do any of that. You may choose to, if you have nothing better to do with your time.  But otherwise you can take solace in this (see No Status Information Letters are Required in Certain Situations): https://www.sss.gov/Registration/Status-Information-Letter

If you became an LPR after your 26th birthday, you don't even need an SIL. You weren't required to register for selective service. So, answer "NO" to the question asking if you registered.

It is on my interview letter as well and I’m female. Like shomer stated above, if it doesn’t apply to you, don’t worry about it.

First, don't worry about this, it will not impact you. From sss.gov:

In accordance with U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) Policy Manual - Volume 12 - Part D - Chapter 7, applicants for naturalization who are over age 31 are eligible for naturalization even if they knowingly and willfully failed to register. This is because the applicant's failure to register would be outside of the statutory period during which the applicant must show that he is of good moral character and disposed to the good order and happiness of the United States.

Second, it's a standard item on interview letters. If you choose to provide evidence,  what to bring depends on whether you were in the US when you turned 26 and what was your status:

  • If you were in the US as a non-immigrand, bring any evidence  of your status such as copies of visa pages, passport stamps showing status designation, I-20s, etc.
  • If you were not in the US, bring evidence that you entered the country in an immigrant status and/or adjusted to an immigrant status after your 26th birthday.

I was in f-1 on my 26th. I submitted copies of my OPT EAD, visas, entry stamps and I-20s. Didn't get any questions.
