Leaving the UK - filling in the P85 form before or after I leave?

So I'm a little confused, because I went online to fill in the P85 form (below where it says "Before you leave" in bold writing) only to get part way through and find that I have to fill in when I left the UK, as if I'm filling this out after I've left. Do I fill this in when I get to the states? Also what information do they need from my P45? Thanks in advance.

I filled mine out before I left, but I had finished my job a month before. You have to be done working and earning anything further that might be taxable.  They can't calculate a possible refund until you are completely finished with UK earning and they know how much was paid in on your behalf.

My husband finished working a couple weeks before he left the UK, filled out the form, and had his dad send it the day after he flew out. He received a nice sum back into his account within a few months.

That makes sense, I won't be finishing work until next thursday, so I'll get it sorted after I've left.

I had questions when I did mine so I rang them up and a really nice lady talked me through each step.

I have forgotten all the form now, but keep in mind they only want to know about taxable earnings in the UK.  I recall somebody on here not knowing how to answer a question like "Will you be working" and they were discussing that they would be once they got EAD. The P85 doesn't want to know if you will be working an American job. They just want to make sure you are done working in the UK so they take you off the tax rolls and total up your account with HMRC.
