Applying for Visitor Visa for In Laws

Hello everyone. I am currently looking into information on getting a tourist b-2 visa for my in laws and I found all the relevant info on the US embassy website. The one part of the process I'm having trouble understanding is this

Quote

Note: Visa applicants must qualify on the basis of the applicant’s residence and ties abroad, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends.

I dont understand what it means by "must qualify on the basis of the applicants residence and ties abroad". My In Laws have never been to the US and two of their daughters are here, but what exactly would ties abroad mean? They would be coming to just visit their daughters and family members and will return back home since they still have other children under the age of 15. What can they do to make sure they qualify?

Thanks in advance for any help.

First thing  - you do not apply for your in laws. They have to apply on their own. There is no sponsorship or anything.

Ties to the country means they need to provide enough evidence they will return to their home country after the trip. There is no guarantee ties. Children are definitely not good enough ties. It's stuff like owning property, having a stady job, school, etc.

Reasons why it would be silly for them to stay in the US, reasons why they need to go home.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Well my father in law does have a business and owns a few homes so I guess he can perhaps show evidence of that. Also I wasnt planning on applying for them, I was just trying to find out all the info so I can let them know how to go about it. Thanks

B is a pretty simple process and having money for such a long journey etc helps.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

So basically showing that he can fund the trip, the stay, and return would help him get the visa?

Sure

How many people can afford to holiday halfway around the world?

Most Americans can not.

Those are a few of the things that can help.  @Roel gave you advice on further evidence to show in their favour.

There's nothing to guarantee them getting a tourist visa, however from what you've described sounds like they have a better chance than others we've seen around VJ.

The biggest challenge is showing they have ties to their home country that forces them to return home.

Is your wife a USC now? She was looking to apply for n400 a year ago.  CO's may look at a USC-immediate relative as a potential sponsor and a B2 applicant as a potential risk to Adjust and overstay. They might run into that risk if their daughter is by now a US citizen.

No my wife is not a citizen, I haven't applied for her yet. She's just a permanent resident, so hopefully that isn't an issue.

Huh

She applies for herself

Oh she never applied?  But yeah, she applies, you don't.. whenever that happens. And while your wife isn't a USC but if her sister is, the same risk may apply for parents' b2.

Yeah I meant my wife hasn't applied yet, and no her sister isn't a citizen either. And yeah the in laws are definitely just coming for a visit, all their family members live back home including their 8 year old son, so they definitely have a reason to go back, but I guess that doesn't mean much to USCIS.

My parents and my younger sister did apply for B2 Visa( tourist visa) in the US embassy in Manila. They had to get a visa so that they can attend my wedding here in the US. I am a K1 visa holder. They brought every document to show their ties in the Philippines such as business permits, land titles etc. My sister even brought her study load showing that  she is a high school student back there. But none was really ask from them even bank statements! The consul just asked my papa's work, when the wedding is and my sister was asked about her school. My mama was not asked anything from the consul! The interview only lasted for 5 minutes and their visa was delivered to them 4 days after the interview.

Tip: your in laws should answer the questions with conviction, and with all truth

Be proactive. Tell them to just bring everything that proves their ties to their country. Even bank books!
