Should white people pay more for lunch?

Imagine standing in a line for lunch. The customer in front you pays $12 for his food box but when you go to pay for the same product, the chef asks if you’re willing to shell out $30 instead.

Why? Because you’re white.

Would you pay?

That was the premise of a social experiment mounted by New Orleans chef Tunde Wey in February. Much to his own surprise the answer was, for the most part, yes.

Nearly 80% of white customers agreed to pay the inflated price for a pre-fixed Nigerian food box lunch at Wey’s Saartje food stand – after he explained that the request was meant to shine a light on New Orleans’ dramatic and widening income gap.

Understand the social experiment, but what happens if it is a poor white person?  I guess that is part of white privilege.

  No one was forced to pay extra. Hard to win a lawsuit when it's your own choice to give extra money.

     The article says he asked "if they want to pay extra". No where does it say anyone had to pay. No different than the website that is linked (the guardian) asking me if I want to pay $1 to read their articles instead of $0.

He explained to the white person why, and then asked if they would pay the increased rate. They weren't forced to.

 

EDIT:

 

A similar and potentially interest experiment would be for a Michelin star, very coveted chef to start charging based on the wealth gap. If the top 1% own 40% of the country's wealth, then charge them accordingly. The details of how to do it would be harder, but it would be another interesting illustration.

No different to say a Landlord charging a Black person more to rent an apartment, they are not forced to rent it.

That would be like if he offered them to pay the increased fee, or not take the food at all. He offered them two prices and they could choose. 

 

It's nothing like your example. There it's either the high rent or no apartment at all. Here it is high price or low price.

So if he explained to the black person that he he is offering for them to pay an increased rent then that is OK.
