Valid I-797C (original) extension letter accompanied by the expired 2yr card.

That should be good for one year from the date of expiry on the 2yr card.

Beyond that, an I-551 stamp in passport.

The problem is that he had to send in his card with the application!

No he didn't....you are supposed to send a copy of the front and back of the card, not the original card.

Make an infopass appointment HERE (yes, you will have to keep trying) and explain the situation, and they should (hopefully) issue you a stamp.

We got a letter saying we had to send in the card. We sent a copy in with the original application. Good luck getting an infopass appointment in LA!

Thanks

Normally the expired card is retained when an I-551 stamp is given, but never heard of them writing and requesting it. How bizarre.

Current instructions remain the same.

I hope you still  have a copy of that latter.. RFE?.. you should bring it with for your Infopass, as a proof your green card has been requested.
