Requesting I-551 passport stamp

Dear Visa Journey family;

 

So I am in a little bit of a conundrum here. I filed my ROC application in July this year before CSC. According to their estimated processing times as of August 2017 their processing cases from July 19 2016. I know, is nuts that is 1 year 1 Month. Anyway, my extension expires by October next year but I need a I-551 with 6 months in it to be able to start training with the Marines. Is it possible, to get a I-551 passport stamp which would have a validity according to some sources I've read of 6 to 12 months BEFORE my extension expires? So that way my I-551 would have over 6 months in it and I have no problems with the military? Marines do take enlistees on conditional I-551 FYI. 

 

So to sum up, I guess the big question would be how soon can you request an I-551 passport stamp before your extension's expiration date? Two months before it expires three? Has anyone experienced a similar situation?

No you will be denied as your extension is still valid and has many more months of validity in it. You have to use it together with your expired green card to show it has been extended for 1 year.

If you need it, they will issue it. I had one of mine done 60 days or so before expiry.

Of course, if you were to lose your extension letter with upcoming travel, and only have a photocopy of it (which is not valid for travel, as the original is watermarked), that perhaps could be seen as a valid reason for the issuance of a stamp very early.

 

 

Also, I hope that you are aware that you qualify for expedited naturalization once you graduate from basic training (which is 13 weeks), so your process will not be comparable to the timelines of others.

Well the requirements for naturalization on account of military service have changed slightly. Before, new recruits had their citizenship granted right after basic now they have to wait until they have 180 days of service to apply.  

 

So did they only issue the stamp 60 days before because you lost your extension letter?  I am getting conflicting views as to how early you can request it. Did you have to present any special document during the process, i.e plane tickets, proof of upcoming trip and the like?
