The "travel document" I'm referring to applies to anyone who NEEDS one. Yes, they CAN help.

This application allows individuals in this situation to apply for a Travel Document (Transportation Letter or Boarding Foil). If the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) determines that the applicant remains an LPR or conditional LPR, DHS may, as a matter of discretion on a case by case basis, provide a Travel Document. The Travel Document may be a foil placed in the applicant’s passport or a boarding letter. If DHS provides a Travel Document, the applicant may present the document to the carrier destined for the United States. Generally, a Travel Document is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.

The quoted information makes it clear that the individual seeking a transportation letter or boarding foil needs to be an LPR or conditional LPR; that clearly does not apply to this case.  Besides -- it isn't needed.  She already has documentation that will get her on a plane (passport with visa and current I-20).  Immigration at the POE can verify her EAD if they want/need to.o

The Consulate will be open tomorrow - Friday - as usual, but then CLOSED for the weekend through the Golden Week/Autumn Festival and Columbus Day -

Hi Jackb, 

sorry that happened to your friend. My friend's reentry experience was actually very easy - and we both believed she lucked out. The officer didn't even ask for her EAD card and simply checked her I-20. 

 

She did prepare a lot of documents besides I-20 and passport just in case

- Proof of employment

- print out of the EAD card

- EAD approval notice

- the paper EAD card was attached to
