Yea, they are obviously more content seeing a real UK license in NC. You can use your UK license, but only for 60 days as a 'visitor' and then if you got stopped you would be driving illegally. Which, of course, for a K1 visa holder is no use. You can get a NC DL for 90 days anyway.

Are you going to get an IDP anyway before you go? I'm going to, regardless of whether it can be used. It's only £5.50 and I'll keep the post office receipt with it to prove the authenticity of the issuing post office.

We'll be based in California so I'm not sure what the rules are there yet - I was going to get my F to do some more research on it with his insurance company and whilst his son's doing his driver's ed atm. Although my F put me on his insurance when I was staying with him last year, by just stating I held a UK license...

I may get one just to use if I drive up into Virginia, where the IDP is accepted. Its actually useless in NC. My plan is to get a NC drivers license as soon as I arrive using SSN card. That license lasts for 90 days compared to the 60 days I can use my UK license. Each state is different, so definitely check Cali's rules. You may even be able to just keep driving on your UK in Cali. NC is a problem State it seems...

Adding to this thread as I went to the DMV today in Wilmington, NC. After a couple of hours I managed to obtain my licence. I took my I-94 which expired today, along with my NOA for my AOS, SSN, passport and proof of insurance (my wife managed to get me added to her car by asking her insurer). They didn’t seem convinced initially but I stayed very polite and told them that I believed I was able to obtain a licence on my pending AOS. I didn’t realise I was going to have to sit a theory and practical test but I went for it and passed (much easier than sitting my UK test). I recommend giving it a try and going to your local DMV stating that you know you are eligible. I think my new licence will last 180 days which will hopefully be after I receive my EAD etc. Hope this helps others in a similar position searching for info!
