So if a family Brazil or Poland who can afford to take a vacation to the US and go to Disney World for 2 weeks will, not only have to personally know someone who lives here, but have that person write a letter for them? If the theory of having an invitation letter is true what happens to that family if they don't know a single person in America?

 

If you really think about it, it really is a silly misconception. The US would lose out on tens of millions of dollars (if not hundreds of millions) in the tourism industry alone if this was an official requirement.

Well, I know in my country this is the common belief, yes... many people there think that they can't apply for tourist visa/visit US if they don't have an invitation letter. It is very silly... Since I came to US I've had a few people ask me for invitation letters just so they can come visit. I keep telling them it's not necessary. When my mom applied I had to write her one just to get her off my head XD I forgot to ask her if they actually looked at it at the interview... :whistle:

Anyone applying for a tourist visa has to prove ties to their country and be approved on their own merits.  If you do a search on here, you'll find many threads talking about letters of invitation and

They do their reviewing of the ds160 way before you get there for the interview. They have an answer for everyone before they even start. I also think they must run some sort of background check and they also check the answers given on the form, if they add up or not.

I had very strong ties to the country, though. I'm older, had a higher education diploma and was enrolled in school to get another one, had a high paying long term job in a very well known company, own property, etc

Oh I see, trying to help people making decisions based on facts rather than common belief is being a know-it-all. I can't see why anyone would prefer to be fed advise based on myths? For me it's about giving back all of the help that I got from this site (and still do) when I started out. I would hate how this site would look if people stopped providing fact and tips&tricks. It is in fact such a helpful site, that people go to, because of it's accuracy and many ppl debunking rubbish and providing real information. If it doesn't fit you, there are plenty of facebook groups to join.
