Thanks everyone for the input..

were gonna forget about the carta de invitación, ... my gf recieved all the info from 3rd party websites or forums saying it was a good thing...

guess not.. thanks guys

I don't know we're people here at VJ are getting their information about Tourist Visa but your girlfriend IS RIGHT!

I got a invitation letter from my now husband (was a friend at the time) when I applied for a TOURIST VISA back in 2012 in BRAZIL. I brought with me a bunch of documents to "prove" the statements that I made when filling the application and the consul that interviewed me only asked me to handle her 2 of them, my my employment certificate and the "INVITATION LETTER".

Better then me trying to convince anyone about it, take a look in to the Rio de Janeiro American Consulate website and look for yourself SHE DOES HAVE TO PROVE THAT SHE HAVE ENOUGH TIES IN BRAZIL and she can't do this with documents.

You are right about one thing, you cant prove ties via documents, which is why they are rarely ever looked at.

In cases where the sponsor is based in the United States (e.g., a U.S.-based organization, an American citizen, or a Legal Permanent Resident in the U.S.), demonstrating ties outside of the United States may be more challenging

To say the least.

Please tell us where you found these letters. That will be good for a laugh.

Refusal rates for Brazil are climbing, but still relatively low as compared to other countries in latin america.

You two should have a chat :D

Consular Officer @ConOfficer meet @GabiMatch

Many ppl on VJ get their information from the actual procedural instructions the field manuals and great contributors that actually work the job, such as ConOfficer. As opposed to many sites where I see ppl literally just making things up sometimes or jumping on a previously departed misinformation train.

The letter is not required. It is a myth, and it is also true that it CAN actually hurt instead depending on the circumstances.

Obviously the vast majority of visitors are doing so on their own dime, having any connection to the US is a minority.

Where an impressive bunda is involved and assuming it does not come with any savings then there are two contradictory issues, showing lack of ties by a US source funding the application and showing ties for the application to be successful.

Sadly no shack up with the bunda visa is available.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

btw, below is an example that I read I while back - came to mind with the current discussion.

This thread on a related forum cracks me up.

"[...] recently a few people on various immigration discussion forums have been spreading the word that visitors visa can never be sponsored and visitors visa is always self-sponsored. They additionally maintain that if the visitor can not take care of their own expenses himself/herself, they should not be allowed to visit the U.S."

Part one of that is absolutely true and often quoted on VJ, while part two of that statement is absolutely ridiculous and I've never seen that statement anywhere. The whole "piece" is basically a justification for why they on that site have been telling ppl applying for a tourist visa to fill out an i-134. With the main point being basically (paraphrasing) - 'oh, by sponsoring we don't mean the kind of sponsoring that is normally referred to when the word is used in immigration related topics/documents, we just mean that the U.S. relative can pay the expenses, look up the definition in a dictionary!'

Which is of course ridiculous, and using a word that has a very specific meaning in a certain context for something else will mainly result in one thing - more confusion.

Also the closing statement "Additionally, please keep in mind that U.S. consular officers are among the smartest people in the world. [...] They absolutely know what is going on with so many visitors visa applicants. Hundreds of thousands of visitors get visitors visa every year in such a manner" - literally made me spit out my coffee.

The argument that many ppl do it and successfully are granted a tourist visa is absolutely no evidence of anything at all unless you know that the letter was a deciding factor (which it is not) and also happen to know that ppl not writing a letter are negatively impacted (which they are not), this is just word poop.

Needless to say that site also promotes sending invitation letters.

That site is quite amusing you will often see people post on their who do not get the 'right' answer here. As far as I could see there is only one person on that forum who has a clue, mainly to sell ####### insurance. Lots of posts, very few replies.

No, she's not. That's commonly passed around misinformation. COs don't care why you're coming to the US so much as why you are compelled to leave. There's plenty of reasons - as far as they are concerned - for somebody to want to visit the US without having a formal invitation to do so.

The fact that you did do an invitation letter and got approved for a tourist visa doesn't mean it is required or helped your case. Anecdotal evidence can be quite dangerous.

@brad walker   Hi there! I know there is plenty going on in the thread already but I wanted to give my personal input.

After doing a year abroad in the US I visited my then boyfriend for one month in 2015, 5 months in the beginning of 2016 and 5 months again from October 2016 until March 2017 with my tourist visa.
When I applied for the tourist visa back in 2015 the only thing I brought with me was proof that I was enrolled in a masters degree program at a Brazilian university. I also brought this document with me in all the trips I made to visit him. I never had any problem.

Regardless of my experience though, I think it will never hurt you to have all these documents prepared at the time of the interview. But they are supporting documents and your girlfriend should hand them in only if asked so. :) Any questions you two might have just feel free to message me! I am almost done with the K1 visa and know all the little details of the Brazilan process!

All the best

It sounds like you are confusing the requirements for k1 visa with tourist visa. A k1 is a non-immigrant fiancee visa, and a b2 is a tourist visa. These are not related in any way. The requirements for each one are unique and related to the actual desired status (tourist or fiancee). I have heard many people talk about the "letter of invitation" in relation to tourist visas throughout the years. This letter is not a real requirement for any of these 2 types.  If she applies for a tourist visa she will have to prove ties to her home country (financial situation, employment, family connections etc),  there is nothing for you to be doing or showing in regard to it, as this first of all makes no sense, and second of all it makes her look suspicious -  that she could be applying for a tourist visa with the intention of immigrating ilegally at any point.

My advice is that you guys talk about this and find out what are your mutual goals and desires for the future. Then create a plan of action based on that.  Finding a good lawyer can help determine the proper legal plan of action, once you two have determined your stance of course.

Hope this helps.

thanks!
