Mexicans fear Trump deportation plan will lead to refugee camps along border

There are precedents in Mexico for refugee camps.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Mexico took in about 46,000 Guatemalans fleeing civil war. With help from the United Nations, camps were set up in the southern states of Chiapas, Campeche and Quintana Roo. When peace accords were signed in Guatemala in the mid-1990s, almost 43,000 refugees and their children went home, but more than 30,000 Guatemalans and their children born in Mexico decided to stay.

The same thing could happen with any migrants housed in Mexico.

Haitians streamed into Tijuana last year to seek asylum in the US, but since January they have stopped applying after hearing that other Haitians’ requests were being denied and US authorities were sending them back to Haiti. Murphy estimated the 3,000 Haitians still in Tijuana had mostly decided to seek asylum in Mexico.

He said many Latin American migrants might do the same.

“You know, a lot of Central Americans would rather be deported to Mexico than their own countries,” Murphy said.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Mexico doesn't have the infrastructure to sustain a lot of extra people, in my humble opinion.

Heck it can't even sustain more Mexicans. We are struggling to find work as it is, minimum wage is a joke.

The thing is, Trump doesn't care what happens to those immigrants as long as they're not in the U.S.

I'm not against helping them,  I just wish we had a system in place, a better government and better conditions.

My government also has to deal with the Mexicans that are being deported, and Peña Nieto is implementing a program

which is making many people mad since we have many issues to work on first. But I understand they need it as well.

Sometimes I feel that my country is a sinking ship and it's a damn shame because it's beautiful, vast, rich, cultural

country that has many things to offer.

It doesn't sound to me like Mexico has any plans to comply with Donald Trump on his newest scheme and I don't think that they should.

Does it matter if they comply?  From what I have read this has to do with illegal border crossers, if they make their way through Mexico to the US border and are turned around, they get to stay in Mexico.  It would be no different for someone crossing into Mexico and being denied entry, they go back to the other country.  I know a large portion of the illegals attempting to the enter are non-Mexican citizens, but this is Mexico's problem allowing those people to come into Mexico in the first place.

As I understand the situation the people involved are being returned to Mexico, obviously if they had entered the SU from another direction and are not Mexicans then they can not be sent to Mexico

If an illegal immigrant from say South America entered through Mexico, and then was caught in the US I don't believe we could "send them back to Mexico"? Mexico doesn't have to accept them. Wouldn't we send them back to their home country? Once they cross over from Mexico to the US, it is then "our problem" and we have to send them back home. Mexico is allowed to refuse them if they are not citizens of Mexico.

Granted the "wall" and other increased securities will help reduce the numbers who actually make it across. If they don't make it across then they are Mexico's problem. However I would still say the minute they make it over they are now ours and Mexico has the right to refuse them.

I think it depends on the actual incident location.  If you cross the border at El Paso coming from Mexico and are denied entry, where are you supposed to go?  In my opinion you have no choice but to turn around.  I was turned around at the Canadian border once.  I was going to a business meeting, but I also had some tools, so they (Canada BP) thought I was going to steal a job from a Canadian.  I did not have the option to stay at Canadian Immigration and say fly back, I had no choice but to turn around.  I would have an issue with this if USCIS were collecting illegals away from the southern border that were not Mexican and trying to force them back into Mexico, at that point, USCIS needs to send them back to their home country, not to Mexico.

The alledged plan is to ship any illegal, caught anywhere in the US but 'believed' to have come through Mexico, 'back' to Mexico regardless of Country of origin. Unless we are to believe what Trumps interpretive apologists team claims that he really means something else, then no, Mexico doesn't need to cooperate with it.

Ya that was just my point. If you are stopped at the border of course you will just be refused entry.

However if you make it past the border and are caught, if you aren't a citizen of Mexico they can't just "send you back". Mexico doesn't have to accept you.

Well maybe Mexico might gain a vested interest in stopping it . They sure don't share the same sentiment on their southern border

''well, México has to do a better job at stopping them so it's their fault''is a very limited, simplistic way of seeing things.

We are still a third world country. Sorry. We just can't make money out of thin air. We have our own huge economical problems and we can't fix them all at once.

It is not that Mexico isn't trying to actively stop people on the border with Guatemala. It's actually a pretty tough, violent border.

But we don't have the same resources, that's why the U.S has been investing in toughening our borders with the south. Something a lot of Trump supporters complain about, money that honestly works to benefit not only my country, but the United States as well: It translates into less immigrants trying to illegally cross to the U.S

Now with the possibility of cutting all economical ties with México, it will only hurt us (and yes, the U.S in some extension)

But the idea of sending anyone to Mexico? We are not Trump's dumpster. We might look like one at times, sadly, but damn it we're not!

I totally agree with a majority of what you said. But I also believe that Mexico needs to do a better job at securing its on borders. When they openly allow hundreds of people from other countries like Haiti and Cuba to come in and use them to come to the USA, they have a part to play as well.

I wouldn't have done it any other way. It might be a lengthy, frustrating and expensive process, but thankfully I can afford it and I know it's the right way to do things.

I just understand when people are desperate enough (although I don't condone it) to find another way.
