what is the procedure for CR-1 visa holder to get the social security number or card? i went to the office they said that the officers at the airport they apply for the SSN for immigrant and then you have to wait for 30 days for the mail to be received else you come here apply for yourself. by filling this form (hands me over the form).

Most ppl just just go to Social security office on their own and apply with a passport and i94, however they may require time to verify your status  if they are not able to find you in the SAVE database right away. If they are able to, then you could have your card anywhere from 5-14 days later.

If you completed the box on the DS-260 form that you wanted a social security number, it will be automatically generated after POE.  In our case, the card was mailed 4 days after entry.  Another user on here I've communicated with stated that after entry they went to the office, but the office said the application had already been generated automatically.

Just a note that this is relevant to people entering on some other status and doing AOS.  There is no I-94 if you enter as a CR-1 as you are immediately a permanent resident upon entry.

Anyone know if 4 days is a normal/expected time for a CR-1?

My wife arrived on her CR-1 9 days ago and we haven't received anything in the mail.

Do you think if i called the SSA they would be able to "look up" and see if the application is pending?

I wouldn't worry at the 9 day mark.  Give it at least a couple weeks.

Thanks for that link!

She only has the visa in her passport and it isn't clear what number to use on that visa on that website, but when I just used her passport number there was no file. It's been almost 3 weeks since her arrival now. It's really annoying when the government can't do their job. Unfortunately it looks like we'll have to go to their office and submit a new application. Just annoying since that won't happen for another two weeks since they work "government hours" - open at 9, close at 4.

We requested ss cards on our DS260... Never happened... go to the SS office with passport that has the visa stamped and get one

Ya I realize we will probably have to do that, it is just annoying that it's okay that it just "never happened" even though it is supposed to. The form specifically asks and so it should be expected that the government does their job and actually apply for the card for you. The process, in my opinion, is mired by multiple layers of incompetance on the part of the government and this is just another one even after the process is supposedly done.

Yes we will go to the office, but we have to wait several weeks because they only work 9 - 4pm, and my point is we shouldn't have to go to the office. It was supposed to be done for us based on the DS260.

Any news on the social security number? My wife and I are in the same boat, here in the USA almost 2 weeks after POE with no social security card in the mail yet. We definitely checked off on the DS260 to have it automatically applied for, but have received nothing.

We went to the SS office 2 days ago (about 5 weeks after her arrival) to apply.

Social Security officer at the desk said her information wasn't in the "Immigration system" yet, so we couldn't actually apply. He took all of our paperwork for the application and said that as soon as it enters the system they can apply, but they don't control it entering the system (it's a Immigration services thing). He said it could take up to another 4 weeks (but I sense it is similar to all government departments...we contact them in 4 weeks if it hasn't happened, and then it is another 4 weeks or something random).

She may end up with her Green Card before the social security number.
