Your anecdotal experience does not represent everyone else's experience.

What would I be getting out of withholding  information? Is this a fun game for me?

Something like this already happened to my wife so it's really not hard to believe.

Your entry into a foreign country is at the border officers discretion, even if you did nothing wrong... just because you had an easy time doesn't mean everyone else will.

Im looking for information, not a hard time. If no one has anything helpful to offer then a mod can go ahead and delete this thread.

Many people have tried to offer good advice, but they are all asking for full information, I'm not the first to question the facts (or lack of), there is a wealth of people to help you, but with information.

You have given a little information, initially it was bad officer, stupid decision. Now its because he looked at his facebook profile, I look forward to the next nugget of information.

What's wrong with us?  Nothing.

People with experience are trying to help you.  We are telling you there is missing information, but you rather take offense and insist that there is something wrong with us.

Best of luck.

I believe that you were told he needs to apply for a b2

Adding my bit that there's something missing. No one with a valid visa\vwp is denied for merely visiting a bf\gf. Primary inspection is ~5 mins. If suspicions are raised, individuals are escorted to Secondary, for an in-depth interview to allay CBP suspicions. That's where fb etc comes into play.

That being said, no point arguing. Friend could apply for a B2.

OP: He may try for a B2, though I am not sure if there will be any success in that. She can certainly try and visit him if she'd like. There are a lot of factors of why he was pulled aside and sent back, not exactly because the CBP was being mean. It's more likely that he stated honestly he was visiting his G/F and did not have or provide enough ties to home to overcome, there was something on the facebook page that sent out red flags, and the very reasonable suspicion that he would not be returning home. The posters here can only assume that is the case based on the limited information provided. We'd simply need to know more about the details of the questions asked and his responses.

Presumably on Facebook he said he was moving to the US?

Interested to know what brought his intentions to their attention.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Could also be a much more romantic "I can't wait to spend my life with you - together 4ever <3<3<3 "  combined with weak ties back home.

Why was it not mentioned?

People are asking for the whole story because it's hard to give advice when they don't know the details. Without the whole story we can't possibly know if going for a B2 is a good idea at this point. It might have exactly the same result as when he tried the VWP, the whole story is important whether you believe it or not.

I think that sometimes people think that we are here to be mean rather than to help.  In this situation I'm reminded of school when I was learning long division. I may have known that 64/8 is 8, but the teacher wanted me to show my work.

OP, in order to give proper advice we need to see the events as best we can.  What sort of questions was he asked?  Documentation signed?  Did he speak of going to the USA on his fb?  Was he carrying job aids of any kind?

If we are getting into mathematics seems to me 99/100 posters know the main issues but for whatever reasons do not just come out with them, like pulling teeth.

Well that's probably a psychological thing. If you have a friend you'd be protective of that friend, if you cared about them. You'd want to support them if they insisted they did nothing wrong. What it mostly turns out to be is the person is likely embarrassed and humiliated and the friend wants to reassure them it wasn't their fault (unless they have a complex that nothing is ever their fault of course). We don't know it was their fault, as the vast majority of people using the VWP seem to rely on a high level of ignorance in thinking this gives them a carte blanche into the country and that so long as they are a 'good person' they won't get caught or seen as suspicious. We can think that the person was at fault of course, and may be possibly right. But the fault is usually either based in ignorance or fraud if we're honest. Every time my husband visited me I was frightened that one day the CBP wouldn't let him in...even with bringing evidence and being honest, we all probably go through that fear. You could bring mountains of evidence, but the burden of proving you aren't going to stay may be too high for some people. Educating people about the system is the only way visitors can start making prepared decisions and realize they have to meet that test of scrutiny. Based on what little info has been provided - it seems the CBP was suspicious about something...
