no need to be sarcastic, I can't tell you how many Americans I've met who assume that foreigners can just move here äs long as they go through legal channels", forgetting there are very few of those channels.

For the diversity lottery, go here https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/ You'll be able to sign up for the 2019 lottery sometime in October 2017 (there's a limited time window). I have no idea if Portugal is eligible but you can find out.

And as said, it's a lottery. I tried a few times, and never got in. In the end though, I won a different kind of lottery, namely the heart of a US citizen :)

You could also try working for an international company with offices in the US. This would still be a temporary stay, but in some cases, it is possible to later get a green card (not exactly sure how that process works or what the criteria are)

Dutchies seem to be able to do that with no problem!

It seems your only option is to have your business transfer you but as all these wise people have mentioned,it's only temporary.

I don't wanna be that guy but you have very very slim chances of coming to the states. You can't use the lotto from the UK.

I won DV but most immigrants to the US get green cards through family.

DV is not complicated at all, in fact as long as you qualify (easy: eligible country and high school education, plus immigrant medical and no criminal record) it is by far the easiest, cheapest and fastest route to a green card. There is a lot of misinformation about DV on this thread making it seem more "complicated" than it is. But ignore the misinformation, instructions are simple and as long as you follow them it's easy. However: it IS a lottery and not a certainty, and as someone above said, it's not a super visitor visa, or just a work permit. If you don't want to live permanently in the US it's not the route to go.

@SusieQQQ how many years did you apply before winning?

We won on our 3rd try. But it's totally random, some people win first time, others enter for over ten years and never win...
