Form W-7 filing - original passport

Has anyone filed W-7 lately? I read the instructions and states that original passport should be sent with Form W-7, which I have concerns about sending the original passport. I know the instructions state that the letter can be obtained from the issuing agency, but our country does not provide such letters. Can anyone share with their experience? Can I just take my wife's passport to the IRS office and have them take a look in person? or does she have to be present? My wife is not in the US right now.

Another question is - Can I just take my wife's passport with me to the IRS center and show them? or does she have to be present with her passport in person?

I filed for my husband last year, he wasn't approved for an ITIN because I when I flied I didn't have the correct forms of ID they wanted and when I was able to obtain them, it was too late. The instructions also indicate that you can submit a certified copy of the passport (the instructions state those have to come from the issuing agency), though I know the IRS prefers originals.  But I understand your concern of sending the original.

No, you're wife doesn't have to be present, but when you file your tax return you have to submit the W-7 along with her original passport.

I meant to file with the IRS Assistance center? I can take her passport with me to IRS and show it to them.

Oh sorry I misunderstood. Yes you can take it to the assistance center and your wife doesn't have to be present for that. :)
