DEVELOPING –  There are "multiple people dead" and at least eight injured Friday after a shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, the Broward County Sheriff says.

The shooting took place around 1 p.m. local time and a suspect is in custody. The city's mayor said there was only one shooter involved.

The airport tweeted that there is an “ongoing incident” at the Terminal 2 baggage claim and that all services are temporarily suspended.

Crews evacuated hundreds of passengers from the terminal onto the tarmac.

Ari Fleischer, a former White House spokesman, was at the airport at the time of the shooting and tweeted that "everyone is running."

The office of Florida Gov. Rick Scott said state law enforcement have not confirmed a motive behind the shooting. Scott is traveling to the scene to be briefed by law enforcement.

The ATF is responding to the scene. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson was monitoring the shooting and getting regular updates -- part of standard practice, a federal law enforcement source told Fox News.

The airport is the 21st busiest in the United States and serves 21 different airlines. Nearly 2.5 million people passed through the airport in November, according to a county government report.

Suspect came in on a flight today, and the gun was in his checked baggage (which I would assume passed through screening at his origin flight). It was assembled in the baggage claim bathroom. You know, it's a wonder this hasn't happened before. I mean, it's a pretty huge vulnerability. The question to me is, was this an international flight? Because that opens up a whole new can of worms.

 

edit: seems it was a Canadian flight. Things are very interesting indeed. We do allow the transport of guns on domestic flights, but I would imagine international rules would be very different? I say this because the procedure of screening is quite different for domestic vs international flights.

Have people always been allowed to pack firearms in checked luggage?

I would be curious to know. I know in many states it is legal to carry before you get to security screening

Pretty much, as far as I know. I'm sure more of our gun specialists could answer that question. Has to be packed and carried a certain way, and you have to declare it (per the TSA website). IMO one of the biggest no-brainer vulnerabilities.This might be the first attack of this kind to use that vulnerability.

I don't really see the difference in having one in your bag and being able to walk in the airport with one

Firearms

• When traveling, comply with the laws concerning possession of firearms as they vary by local, state and international governments.

• Firearms must be unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container and transported as checked baggage only. Only the passenger should retain the key or combination to the lock.
• Firearm parts, including magazines, clips, bolts and firing pins, are prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.
• Replica firearms, including firearm replicas that are toys, may be transported in checked baggage only.
• Rifle scopes are permitted in carry-on and checked baggage.

 

 

United States Code, Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 44, firearm definitions includes: any weapon (including a starter gun) which will, or is designed to, or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive; the frame or receiver of any such weapon; any firearm muffler or firearm silencer; and any destructive device. As defined by 49 CFR 1540.5 a loaded firearm has a live round of ammunition, or any component thereof, in the chamber or cylinder or in a magazine inserted in the firearm.

Ammunition

• Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.
• Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm. Read the requirements governing the transport of ammunition in checked baggage as defined by 49 CFR 175.10 (a)(8).
• Small arms ammunition, including ammunition not exceeding .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge, may be carried in the same hard-sided case as the firearm.

To a degree, but there is a lot less security in the baggage claim, and at some airports there is not any security (it allows persons from the outside unscreened to get in). While a person could theoretically walk into an airport with a gun and have 'fun times', the lack of security in this area allows for a person to pick a large number of people off fairly quickly before any security could stop them. Components can be left or smuggled into those back bathrooms and easily reassembled with components being brought into checked baggage. I know you might not see a potential problem, because it's the right to carry issue. But it is a vulnerability. People aren't always going to attack us with bombs... they are going to look for easy ways to do quick damage in the most strangest (as this seems) of ways.
