Dual Citizenship US and Australia

7 posts in this topic

Recommended Posts

HI there,

I am a US citizen living in Australia at the moment and I am wanting to get Aussie Citizenship as well as stay with the US as I plan to move back there soon.  In Australia you have to apply to become a citizen, does that mean I would lose my US citizenship?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

The U.S. tolerates dual (or more) citizenship so no issues in this end. Just remember that every time you travel to the U.S., you will have to use your American passport to enter the States even if you hold other passports. As far as I know, Australia also allows dual citizenship but check to make sure. If Aussie also allows, then you got nothing to worry about. Good luck!

The U.S. definitely allows dual citizenship. This has been discussed countless times. You can also find a wealth of information on the web if you simply type "dual citizenship" in Google.

Thank you, yes that was what I was reading:

Also, a person who is automatically granted another nationality does not risk losing U.S. nationality. However, a person who acquires a foreign nationality by applying for it may lose U.S. nationality. In order to lose U.S. nationality, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign nationality voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. nationality

The above would mean I may risk losing my US nationality right?
