Maintaining Residence "Abroad"

Hi all,

This is probably a strange one... I'm an unconditional green card holder currently living in the US. I'm considering a job with an American company (non-government) that supports government operations at the American Antarctic base at McMurdo. The job requires extended periods on-site down there, and since it's technically abroad, I'm wondering how that effects my residency and naturalization down the line. I'm not sure how long the time periods spent down there would be yet.

So the main question: Does working for a private American company on a US government facility, in what is technically not a country but also not in the US, count as me being abroad for immigration purposes? I'd be worried about losing residency for leaving the country for extended periods.

Thanks

What an enviable opportunity.

Doesn't the company's legal department have an authoritative answer?

If not:  Would you maintain a permanent residence and mailing address in the U.S.?

From this, it appears that scientific & environmental research take precedence over any claims of sovereignty:

If no one here has a definitive answer, this might be a good question for a good law firm:

This outfit (the largest immigration-law firm west of the Mississippi, I think) has very reasonable phone/e-mail consultation rates.  I have no connection with them except as a satisfied customer of years ago.  If you contact them or another firm, be sure to tell us the answer.
