My wife filed for AOS, and everything has went along smoothly. Until we got another letter in the mail asking for additional evidence (I-485) asking us to send them another I-864

is this normal? we saw no where that this was needed to be sent in with the rest of our paperwork. They already took the payment check and brought her in for fingerprints for her work permit. And if I have a joint sponsor, do her and I both need to fill out I-864 A? I'm not using/taking her money, shes just pledging to take responsibility or however the I-864 works.

I'm just as confused as ever again at this point

You are the main sponsor...so regardless if you have a co-sponsor the main sponsor always has to submit a i-864. And your co-sponsor does too. When you fill out the form you either put if you are the main sponsor or the joint sponsor where it asks for it.

Also, yes this is normal :) They cash the check if the package is complete in regards to the fees and forms accompanying. If other forms are sent along for supporting (that need correcting) or if supporting docs/forms are missing altogether you instead get an RFE. EAD processing, which also requires the biometrics, will normally continue to progress at this time since it is the i-485 that requires the affidavit.

10/13/2016: Filed AOS + EAD/AP.   07/07/2017: Permanent resident (Conditional)
04/16/2019: Filed ROC  11/17/2020: Approved. (10 yr GC)
