Thank you! uuggghhh I'm tryying hahaha just got my EAD card for production message on Friday..so I'm stepping it up right now... Got contacted by a few recruiters... the last one as recently as today for a position I'm more than well qualified for, they're based out of New Jersey actually in clinical research, that's funny!  :D... of course, since I have no US work experience, it might still pan out to nothing... DId you find your lack of US experience to be a problem? Is the 3 months from when you had your card or did you have a GC from the beginning? It's frustrating when you know you are more than qualified, would do a excellent job and you just need that foot in the door....

I used Indeed when looking for jobs, I even had employers contacting me after seeing my profile on Indeed so it doesn't hurt to tick that box making your resume visible to potential employers. Where I work now, part of my responsibility is recruitment and we've found two of our employees by looking up job seeker profiles on Indeed. Attending job fairs is another good way to meet potential employers. 

 

Make sure your CV has been converted into the American style resume. Don't put any personal information like age, picture etc.

Thank you!  Go Sweden! You were so lucky to be in a field in an area with such big pull for it!! I'm sure you would've still gotten a job otherwise but luck was definitely on your side girl!  
I'm confident I have a good and appropriate resume at this point... I just need to keep at it as said above  I'll get there!

3 months from when I started applying - there were prior offers but they weren't the right fit.

I came in on a K1 and began applying about 1 month before getting the EAD. My lack of working experience in the US was not an obstacle - I am in a pretty specialized field though and have other international experience.

Be specific in looking for a job and don't settle. Know your skills and sell them!

This make me a a little more optimistic, I'll be landing/moving in Austin the first week of April. When I received my GC in 2015 (I'm in the DV category) I did an exhaustive amount of research on US cities and Austin came consistently in the top 10 in all of the tech job reports I've read and based on the weather, cost of living etc I selected Austin and even visited for a couple of weeks last year to get a feel for the city. My background is in IT (11 years exp, Educated in the UK) and I hope I can be as successful/lucky as you in my job search. I'm really nervous since even though Austin looks good on paper based on the tech reports I've reviewed but I've no idea what the actual job situation is on the ground.

If you're in IT, you're gonna want to be up in Tech Ridge. A lot of the IT companies are along East Parmer Lane. You got Apple, Oracle, IBM, Dell, EA Games and a whole lot of others in Tech Ridge and along E Parmer Lane. 

 

A one bedroom apartment will cost around $1,000. Plus electricity and water.

 

It's a relaxed, open-minded and friendly area. It's very easy to meet people and make new friends. I always say Austin has the best of America and the best of Europe wrapped into one awesome city. ?

 

Winter weather's nice in Austin but the summers are BRUTAL. Last year, summer lasted from May to November and we're talking +90 (+32 C) pretty much every single day with quite a few days reaching over 100 (38 C) and with the humidity, it feels even warmer. The summer weather is actually why I've convinced my husband to move elsewhere. So we're actually leaving for North Carolina in a year.  But if you can stand the heat, Austin's an awesome place to live.

Yea it might take a little bit... I'm waiting to hear back atm from a company that at least wanted me to go to the next step in the process by signing a noncompete agreement, agreeing to certain terms and providing references... I'm really hoping on this one.. but like you say, if not then I just gotta stick it out  My EAD card was mailed to me today...so I don't need to worry about getting that in time at least, if they want me to go to the next step again. Well... unless USPS mess up

Hey guys, since I promised an update, I just wanted to let ya'll know that today I was offered job, and it's a really good job that I'm super happy with. I'm still a bit in disbelief that they picked me! I got my Green Card a couple of weeks back and the recruiters I had been in contact with seemed to be more active right after that, for matching me. I don't know if that was coincidental or not, I'm just super happy and so relieved!

 

I had a technical interview with the company over the phone on Thursday, and boy was it detailed! I felt exhausted afterwards, but did feel that I had done a good job. 

 

I start in 2 weeks, they are just starting their background checks on me, and I'll be doing a drug-test - that's new for me lol. We don't have that normally in Sweden.

 

Good luck to all still searching! Your job could be right around the corner too

Congrats!! Really happy you got a job that matches your background. This makes me a little more hopeful as I'm landing in Austin, TX next week and I've had some interest from a couple of recruiters and I hope this would translate into some job opportunities.

I found that the resume format seems very important. Not only what was noted earlier in this thread but in how you describe previous jobs.

Short action based bullet points is definitely the way to go. Anything else becomes long-winded and confusing for HR people to read. 

For example

Instead of writing:

 

Role - Chemist

Primary tasks consisted of hplc method development and validations[...]

 

You would write:

 

Role - Chemist

× Developed and validated hplc methods

× [...]

 

I think you will be fine... if it takes a few weeks don't get discouraged, but there is def. more IT in Austin than there is Pharma Industry in Dallas...so I have a feeling you won't be waiting that long.
