Hot chocolate, pies and truffles be warned — whipped cream is in short supply across the country. And yes, that includes Iowa.

Manufacturers warned that beloved whipped cream in a spray can, which stays fluffy with the help of nitrous oxide gas, may be hard to come by this winter because of curbed production of the gas.

Lanie Friedman, a representative for Conagra Foods, confirmed the whipped cream deficit with The Register in an email statement on Friday.

"Due to an industry-wide supply issue, there is currently a shortage of some whipped toppings, including Reddi-wip," Friedman said. "We are proactively managing the production of Reddi-wip, and are doing the best we can to make it available to as many consumers as possible."

And the reason the fluffy topping is in short supply is tragic.

1st world problems are the worst. All you actually need is cream and a whisk to make whipped cream. People used to do it that way all the time. Probably better for you too.
