My green card is set to expire in June, 2017. I understand that instructions state I-90 should be filed within 6 months of expiration, which falls to December 2016.

However, I'm currently overseas on vacation and won't be back to US until Mid-January. As I heard that renewals are taking longer due to load, I wanted to apply for renewal in December. Is it possible to apply for renewal online while I'm abroad? I'm just hoping to save time, possibly a few weeks, by filing in December versus in Mid- january. Do I have to be physically present in the US to apply for renewal online?

You can file online: https://www.uscis.gov/file-online/log-online-filing

I don't believe you need to be physically present in the US before you can file, but bear in mind that you will be scheduled for a biometrics appointment usually within a month or so of applying, and you will need to be physically present in the US for that.

If it were me I would file online a few weeks before your planned return to ensure any biometrics appointment will fall after you return to the country.
