Will accepting SSI benefits hurt chances of sponsoring mother?

Hello all. It's been a while! I hope all is well! My wife is now a citizen, and it is about time to consider bringing her mother here from the Philippines to live with us. I got a call yesterday from SSI, offering possible benefits because we have a disabled son. I'm wondering if this will hurt us when trying to bring her mother here. I'm sure the form asks if we have ever received government assistance. Does anyone know if this will be a factor?

Technically that SSI is for your son, it's his money, ya'll will just be the authorized reps for it.


I'm going to say no it doesn't hurt. I'm assuming your son is a USC, and he is entitled to SSI due to disability if the SSA decides it's so. It's technically HIS money, and not yours or your wifes, even though ya'll can be authorized reps for him and basically choose how that money is put to use. Every year you'll recieve a form from SSA verifying that your child has received X money per yer, and that you as the rep have either saved or used the funds given for your child's benefit.


My daughter also receives SSI due to disability, it was never an issue for my husband's K-1 visa or his green card.

Also on the awardance paper for the SSI, it will say that it was awarded due to DISABILITY, versus due to low income.
