jobs

The second half of the announcement details that the investment will bring 50,000 jobs to the US. It's not clear if that's going to companies that will then hire 50,000 people or that it is going to companies that already employ 50,000 Americans.

While it is most likely the former, the vagueness of the news doesn't provide much insight into how many people can expect jobs out of the venture or the time frame in which it would happen.

Nothing is official

During the impromptu press conference at Trump Tower, Son held up a PowerPoint slide that appeared to show details of the investment and bore the signature of Trump. This, however, does not mean any agreement has been formally made, according to people familiar with the matter, and no legally-binding contract has been signed.

Additionally, the announcement did not give any sort of timeline for the investment. The PowerPoint presentation appeared to suggest it would take place over the next four years, however. It also bore the Taiwanese multinational Foxconn's logo and suggested another $7 billion would be invested over that period alongside the Vision Fund's $50 billion.

Based on the information given by Son and Trump, however, it does not appear that this move is out of the blue or solely due to Trump's win.

Of note, SoftBank, a hyper-acquisitive company, has faced resistance from regulatory agencies in the US before most notably when Sprint was mulling a takeover of T-Mobile. So it may simply be engendering goodwill with the new administration.

The auto industry represents the old order of things, corrupt union control padded with cushy jobs.Better to let the market purge the industry. Only Ford is a winner and we back winners.

the future. During an earnings call last month, he said he wanted to be tech's Warren Buffett, and he has a 300-year plan for SoftBank (SFTBF). Yes, 300 years.

He wants his company to help break down language barriers and allow people to communicate telepathically.

It may seem odd that a billionaire who wants to make silent communication a reality, just met with a billionaire known for loudly expressing his views at massive rallies. But not for Son.

He has a track record of meeting directly with world leaders to talk business. Last week, he chatted with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about SoftBank's $10 billion investment in India's technology sector.

In September, he called on President Park Geun-hye to talk about investing in South Korea.

Despite his ability to open doors, he hasn't always had things easy in the U.S. SoftBank paid more than $20 billion to take control of Sprint (S) in 2012, but regulators blocked his attempt to merge the struggling mobile carrier with T-Mobile (TMUS) in 2014.

After Tuesday's meeting, Son said he decided to back American startups because Trump had made deregulation part of his platform.

quite a lot of what trump stands for represents the old order of things, of which the natural order is to be purged. the irony is maddening.
