Hi, I have been going through the K-1 Visa process since mid-October and so far, everything is going smoothly! I just received today notice from NVC that they are forwarding the application to Stockholm, where my fiancé lives. Now, I just have some questions about the interview process and also the financial requirements. I'm currently a 3rd year college student and unemployed so my tax returns don't show anything. However, money I have received from my parents and money from a settlement I received can be seen in my bank account statements. So, as far as the I-134 document, would paperwork such as my bank account showing substantial amounts of money be acceptable? I read that you can also show property you own/assets, how would I show the value of these or would I simply show the deeds/titles to said items? Are copies of those documents acceptable? I can't imagine they'd request originals.

I have also thought about my parents sponsoring, which they would be fine with doing. Would they be filing an I-134 as well?

Final questions: who would I send these to? Do I send this to my fiancé in Sweden or someone else? Do they request these after the interview or before? Also, in your personal opinion, do you think my petition would be approved based on what I've stated regarding my situation?

Thank you in advance, I know it's a lot but I've been scouring google for answers that I can't seem to find!

Sam

One quick last question! Does anyone have experience with the Stockholm Embassy and how long it would be until the interview? I received notice from NVC that they're forwarding it to Stockholm, just to give you some info.

If you're going to use assets, you need at least 3x the income requirement in liquid assets. Your primary residence and first/only car cannot be counted. You'll need to show that the money has been in your possession for some amount of time (bank statements for the last year would be good). For other property you'll need to show official value assessments.

Your parents can sponsor. They would also need to fill out an I134 and submit supporting evidence.

The I134 and original supporting evidence will be brought to the interview by your fiancé.

The Stockholm consulate let's the applicant schedule their own interview. It's usually possible to get an interview date no.more than 1,5 months out.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

Hi!

Have you read the instructions? https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-134instr.pdf

If the value of your own assets is more than 100% of the poverty line for your household size you'll be fine. Assets must be readily convertible to cash without financial hardship.

Since you have no job income, I would submit as much as I can and attach a statement to your situation. Once you do the AOS when your fiancée is in the states you will fill out a more comprehensive form. Perhaps you'll have a job by the or you can opt to include your parents as co-sponsor at that time. That affidavit requires 125% of poverty line and probably using your parents at that stage wouldn't hurt :)

You send it to your fiancée and she brings it to the interview. I had copies and original documents with me at the Stockholm embassy. They may ask for originals of any submitted copies including what was sent with i-129f package. Remember that your fiancée needs to have certified copies of any documents that she brings that are in Swedish. You should be getting an email with everything she needs to bring.

I was able to book an interview within 2-3 weeks, the medical was harder to get an appointment for, and needs to be done at least 11 days prior to interview by recommendation. Has she had it yet? She will need the case number from NVC to book medical. I'm guessing she will/has done it at Sibyllekliniken?

Has your fiancée filled out the DS-160? She needs to pay the consular fee on the traveldocs website, book the interview and bring the confirmation pdf with the DUI number and bar code...

Good luck with it all :)

EDIT: Value of assets are counted as previous poster mentioned :)

Alright, so the original documents... would I be sending originals of asset documents (vehicle titles etc)?

The letter I received stated they would send my Fiance his required list of things to do. Should he wait until the letter comes to do the DS-160 an book the interview or should he reach out to book the interview now? Same with the medical?

Thanks!

The instructions from the consulate come by email, and is often sent to the petitioner (both of you should be checking your spam filters regularly).

As long as you have your case number though, there is really nothing stopping you from progressing. Except, wait until you have the email (=know the embassy has received your case), before booking the interview. I've seen one or two cases where the embassy cancelled the booking because they didn't recognize the case.

He can do the DS-160 now. He can schedule the interview once the email is received (but perhaps better to know first when you get an appointment for medical) and if you have the NVC case number he can e-mail Sibyllekliniken for the medical. They only schedule by email.

If he has not yet gathered his vaccination history, he should do that aswell.. The doc will want to take copies and needs to know what (if any) shots he's missing so they can administer them and fill in your vaccination worksheet (DS-3025). Also tell him to ask for copy of that worksheet for his records.

Oh, and as far as original titles - copies will suffice, but for example a bank statement will be written by the bank on official stationary and with date and signature specifically for this occasion. In this case make copies (but can be done in Sweden ofc to save postage) and bring both. If they take the original, it's still good for you to have a copy of everything that's been handed over. For us they were happy with copies and didn't need to submit the originals.

Okay, thank you both do much for answrring those questions for me. I have one other though. For the medical exam, is it all out of pocket? I read on the travel.state.gov site that its $400+. Is this true or does it get partially covered in sweden because of your healthcare etc?

Since this is totally optional and not an exam required for medical purposes it's all out of pocket yes. It is expensive...

Sibyllekliniken issues medical reports for visa applicants to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and USA.

To schedule an appointment, please send an email to Visumintyg@Sibyllekliniken.Com med with the following details:

I have another question! So my Fiance has scheduled his interview and his medical exam. For the chest xray, will he be able to drop in in the morning and have it done and ready to go with him to his 1 PM appt for the medical? Or is that not able to be done?

I called Sofiahemmet and asked them about this, cus that's exactly what I wanted to do as well. The lady said no problem it will only take you around 30 min and that's exactly how long it took. Also the two places are about a 10-15 min walk apart. Of course some extra time is still always good to have :)

Oh and yes they have drop-in for this...

If you have no job, then you'll have to prove you have 3x the amount in assets to cover the missing amount of income. MOST consulates look at the 125% poverty line because you're expected to AOS after marriage, which will be 125% of the poverty line. Some people expect the consulate to take 100% because that's TECHNICALLY the rules for the I-134, but the I-134 is used for both visitors, K-1, and other visas. K-1 is non-immigrant with immigrant intent, and they're aware you're going to need more money down the line, so almost all consulates look at the 125% instead of the 100%. To them, there's no point of sending your fiance here if he's going to waste away and can't AOS because the requirements won't be met.

If you don't have a job and no income at all, then you have to cover the ENTIRETY of the 20,025 (125% poverty line https://www.uscis.gov/i-864p for a household of two) and then multiply that for 3.

You would need to prove you have AT LEAST 60,075$ to meet the 125% requirement, or 48060 if for some reason they do take the 100%. This needs to be all in money that can be EASILY cashed out.

You can not use your house or your first car, as that would cause a hardship. You can use anything else, but you will have to have it appraised by an appraiser, and then include the letter from the appraiser saying how much X item is worth.

Make sure that you get bank documents showing when money was given to you. If it was given soon, they may not like that, so make sure you have documentation of where the money came from.

Unless you do have over 60,000$ in the bank, with full documentation on how you got it, and not too close to the line, the normal advice is for anyone without income to go ahead and have someone (your parents in this case) co-sponsor. There's no harm in having their paperwork for cosponsoring at the interview, if they don't accept what you have, you have a back up. It's extra insurance for them to make sure your fiance will be 100% good in the US.

Oh and if your parents cosponsor, they fill out and provide the same info you do for the most part. They would provide a filled out I-134, provide tax return/W2, or tax transcript, a letter from employer stating how long employment has been going on, part time or permanent position, and slated annual salary, and then all of that is backed up by a couple of months worth of pay stubs. If they make over what is needed for their household (them, any dependants they claim on a tax return or children under 18, and your fiance) then assets don't need to be included.
