I'm a conditional permanent resident, do I still need my passport if I travel within the u.s or the green card alone will suffice?

if you just entered and the stamp in your passport is your only proof of residency then you need to carry your passport with you till you get the physical greencard. then you can carry either your green card or your passport with the stamp until the validity of the stamp runs out then you have to carry the green card.

personally if the stamp is valid still i would carry the stamped passport since it is cheaper to replace that than a green card (costs 450 or so bucks to replace green card)

Not necessarily. The cost of replacing a passport depends on how far away you live from your country's embassy. In my case, I would have to take a flight to the Swedish embassy to apply for the passport and then a flight 10 days later to pick up the passport, then contact USCIS to get a new I-551 stamp. Much more expensive.

OP, if you often loose your wallet/bag then yes, by all means either don't carry your green card or carry a copy of it, since you're legally required to carry it. Personally, I haven't lost my wallet in 40 years so I have no worries about carrying my green card on me.

I understand, I'm from Israel so getting a new passport would be a hassle for me too! Plus the law requires all legal residents like me & you to carry their green card at all time (JUST LIKE you carry your state ID, driver license etc so I guess I'll have to carry it!

It'd be much better if I was a naturalized citizen but I guess I'll have to wait for it

Green Card is best but never been needed for us and we fly all over the Continental U.S. and Hawaii. just drivers license. We do fly primarily non-stops out of seattle and Washington is one of the more lenient states with immigration monitoring. My spouse will be traveling with his green card and drivers license in the U.S. International is passport of current citizenship of course as well.
