Vaccination Record

Hello,

I'm wondering whether a particular format is required for the vaccination record for the K-1 medical at Knightsbridge? I got my vaccination history from my GP (and paid £20 for the privilege!) and it is just one sheet of paper, filled in by the nurse, with dates of my vaccinations written in pen beside each vaccination name. It was not signed by the nurse, and didn't even have the surgery name on it until I asked them to stamp it. Will this be adequate for the Knightsbridge GP?

Secondly, Im confused about the TDaP requirement. I had mine more than 10 years ago so definitely need it again, but there seems to be a lot of ambiguity about whether the "P" in this vaccination should be polio or pertussis? I can't find anywhere nearby to get a TDaP with Pertussis in it. So, would you recommend waiting to get the TDaP at Knightsbridge so I get the correct one? Or should I get the TDaP (Polio) at my GP or other travel clinic? Another factor is that I might not even be able to get this for free at my GP; they haven't given me a definitive answer about whether or not it is free on the NHS.

Thanks for your time.

I've attached a screenshot from the CDC website in relation to the required charts. Apparently I cut off right before it talks about the TDaP specification, so I'll see if I can find this again. This chart is helpful nonetheless

There we go. The second paragraph talks about that vaccine

Thanks for this. I have seen this chart but had not seen the text you attached in your second screenshot. This makes it a bit clearer for me that I should have had Pertussis in childhood and Td in the last 10 years. My GP did not include Pertussis on my vaccination history so I will need to go back and double check However, even the doctor in Knightsbridge does not seem to offer a Pertussis vaccination: http://www.knightsbridge-doctors.com/practice-fees.htm

I finally found this web page you have screenshotted here. I'd be reluctant to follow this as this is just generic CDC guidance, not specific guidance relating to immigrant visas.

The table in your earlier comment, and on this page, states "Td/Tdap" for the 18-64 age group. I'm not sure whether this means either of the two vaccinations are acceptable, and hence that it is not a problem to not have had pertussis.

For one, I'd take a look at this thread and this should clarify the type of vaccine you need to receive.

Go to your NHS doctor and get the immunizations you will need for Adjustment of Status. You can get a K1 visa without having any shots, but you will need them before AOS. It’s extremely wise to take care of it before getting to the US so you can avoid civil surgeon hassles and $$$. Many NHS doctors will do them for free, but they are not obligated to do so for immigration purposes. Get the shots documented by your doctor to take to your visa medical exam. If your doctor should say you don’t need something on this list, remember you have to go by US rules and that differs from UK standards. Here are the shots needed for 19 through 59 years of age:

  • Td or Tdap - Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis or get DT, DTP or DtaP and it will be accepted for AOS also. The latest shot must be no longer than 10 years ago or you need a booster. If you have a record of receiving pertussis, then the Td is okay for the booster.
  • MMR - (if born in 1957 or later)-Mumps/measles/rubella. It's two doses in your life, but if you get the first dose, and 4 weeks haven't passed by your medical, they will waive the second dose for "insufficient time interval". If you only had one dose as a child, get a second one before the medical.
  • Varicella - Not routinely given in the UK . A history of having chickenpox excuses you from the shot. They take your word for it at the visa medical exam.
  • Influenza – Required during flu season only, October 1 through March 31. This was a new recommendation dated November 2010 for all ages over 6 months. Older lists will say flu shots for over age 50. It changed. The list on the London embassy website is out of date since 2009. Don’t follow it.

There have been a lot of discussions on here about the polio and the pertussis thing, I would say not to think too hard on it. Get a TD I should think would cover it. You will pay a hefty fee at Knightsbridge, and be cautious that they don't want to fob you off by not wanting to give you the vaccination. If you need a vaccination, get it, and don't let them tell you to get it after the visit. It's their job and they need to do it, if you haven't already received it at your GP. If you can't get it through the GP, try Boots with documentation of course. What documents you have should be fine.

My husband was able to get everything but the tetanus booster through NHS. They gave him the shot, and it only cost ~£8 as compared tob £45 through Knightsbridge.

Seeing how we are talking about vaccines, are you able to get them through your doctor or do you have to go to London to get them? My fiance in England is not sure.

As per the info and link above, you can get them at your GP or Boots. But it is advisable to get them before or during the Knightsbridge, London visit and not afterwards.

Agreed. (S)He likely won't be able to get them in one place if he wants to get it as cheaply as possible though. E.g. for me NHS will offer MMR for free; tetanus for a price; but won't administer flu at all unless you're in the high risk category. So I'm going to a chemist to get flu. A travel clinic or Knightsbridge would do them all in one place but it would be more expensive in total.

Thank you very much for all this advice. Just to update, I'm getting TDaP (Polio version) along with vaccination record showing I had pertussis shot as a child. Hopefully this will suffice.

I'm going to try and get the nurse to sign my vaccination record if possible, but otherwise I'll just have to hope it is legitimate enough for Knightsbridge!

As an aside, my GP is charging £40 for tetanus! Sounds like you were lucky with the ~£8 yunnipie. Seems like charges and policies on NHS vaccinations wildly vary. Might be different for me too because I'm NHS Scotland.
