Travel while waiting for 10-year green card (lifting conditions pending)

I have filed Form I-751 to lift the conditions on my green card. I attended my biometrics appointment a couple of weeks ago. Since I've made it this far, I'm not too worried about this whole process.

However, there is one snag, and I'd like to know if anyone has any experience with this.

My green card expires in November. I do not know how long it will take for them to send me my new green card. Until they send my my new green card, the only proof I have that I am a legal resident is that piece of paper they send out saying that they got your I-751 and that your residency has been extended for one year while they process it.

I would like to go back home to Canada for Xmas, like I usually do. But if I don't have my new green card by then, do you think I'll have any trouble at the boarder? I would, of course, bring that piece of paper, but I'm not sure what kind of trouble I would have trying to get back in to the US. I usually present my green card at the boarder instead of my passport (we drive across the boarder). Obviously the expired card would raise some flags, and I'm not sure how much they will care about that piece of paper.

Anyone know anything about this? If it's going to be an issue I might just skip the trip.

I'd be driving across the boarder at the Peace Arch (roughly between Vancouver and Seattle) if that helps.

You will need the original letter and your expired green card, nothing else! You'll be fine. This question is asked a lot in the forums

That's quite alright! I was just sharing so you knew where I was getting that answer, because I am still in the middle of petitioning for my husband and we have several years until we'll need to apply for ROC ourselves.

We drove up & down through Peace Arch two days ago with my wife's expired card + extension letter, no problem.

In the interest of sharing for anyone who looks at this thread later, while I've never had a problem traveling with the extension letter and expired card, some airline personnel are not familiar with the process so it required additional discussions with their supervisors etc. I think Canada border crossing is very low risk for this type of issue, however, for others, best to leave yourself ample time in case the airline needs to do their checking.
